Historia
Thomas Johnson and Charles Spurgeon lived worlds apart: Johnson, an American slave, born into captivity and longing for freedom and Spurgeon, an Englishman born into relative ease and comfort but, longing, too, for a freedom of his own. Their respective journeys led to an unlikely meeting and an even more unlikely friendship, forged by fate and mutual love for the mission of Christ. Steal Away Home tells a previously untold story set in the 1800s of the relationship between an African-American missionary and one of the greatest preachers to ever live.

Worth listening through to the end, despite flaws
Revisado: 12-04-22
(This critique is for the audiobook only.) I concur with those who were put off by this book's flawed writing. There were several times when I was ready to give up on it altogether. Nevertheless, I'm glad I hung in there. The book improved tremendously when Charles and Thomas finally met, and that scene even brought me near to tears. Thomas Johnson spoke to my soul in that scene, and in several others as well.
I'm glad to now have some inkling of how much my life has been enriched by a former slave, whose ministry to Spurgeon helped Spurgeon minister to me (and to countless others).

Historia
Assurance of faith is the conviction that one belongs to Christ through faith and will enjoy everlasting salvation. It is more than believing the gospel - it is believing that these truths apply to you. Having assurance affects life in more ways than forgiveness of sin, alleviation of guilt, and salvation from the punishment of hell - it affects your whole being, firing up your affections for Christ, your unshakable trust in God, your burden for the unsaved and your joy in life and even death.

Historia
As Assistant Private Secretary to four monarchs, 'Tommy' Lascelles had a ringside seat from which to observe the workings of the royal household and Downing Street during the first half of the 20th century. These fascinating diaries begin with Edward VIII's abdication and end with George VI's death and his daughter Elizabeth's Coronation. In between we see George VI at work and play, a portrait more intimate than any other previously published.

One of the most enjoyable audiobooks I've heard.
Revisado: 04-14-21
Pip Torrens was absolutely brilliant in his reading/acting of this audiobook. How he managed to read so rapidly (to capture the quick pace of Lascelles' brilliant mind), without ever sounding clipped or breathless, and while maintaining such perfect diction and personable inflection, is a true wonder. He scarcely ever paused, and yet left you always wanting more. Bravo!
As for Lascelles himself, I can only say I wish I had known him. A truly fascinating man. Though I differ with his thoughts on religion, I enjoyed his insights and wit on everything else, and I believe I would have liked him very much if we'd ever met.
I highly recommend this audiobook.

Historia
Christianity is a picture of reality. It explains why the world is the way it is. When the pieces of this puzzle are properly assembled, we see the big picture clearly. Christianity is a true story of how the world began, why the world is the way it is, what role humans play in the drama, and how all the plotlines of the story are resolved in the end. In The Story of Reality, best-selling author and host of Stand to Reason Gregory Koukl explains the five words that form the narrative backbone of the Christian story.

Historia
In My Stroke of Insight, Taylor shares her unique perspective on the brain and its capacity for recovery, and the sense of omniscient understanding she gained from this unusual and inspiring voyage out of the abyss of a wounded brain. It would take eight years for Taylor to heal completely. Because of her knowledge of how the brain works, her respect for the cells composing her human form, and most of all an amazing mother, Taylor completely repaired her mind and recalibrated her understanding of the world.

Historia
For half a century, a terrible secret lay hidden, locked in a trunk in an attic... photos, official documents, and scraps of a diary written by a young girl. "The time has come when I must share my life story... some facts from the past that could make a contribution, however small it may be, to the history of mankind." The Secret Holocaust Diaries is a haunting eyewitness account of Nonna Lisowskaja Bannister, a remarkable Russian-American woman who saw and survived unspeakable evils as a young girl.

Incredible story, beautiful narration
Revisado: 01-29-17
The first thing that grabbed me was the narrator's voice. So very pleasant that I just wanted to pull up a chair and listen. But she wasn't limited to "sweetness and light." When tragic things had to be communicated, she did so with real feeling. I would happily listen to her again.
True, she stumbled over a few of the foreign words and names, but I couldn't bring myself to take a star away from such an excellent performance.
As for the story: It is absolutely vital that it be told and retold. And don't fear that it will be a depressing book even though much of it is hard. Much of the story highlights the beauty of good and loving hearts which refused to give in to hate. This is an excellent narrative which should be widely heard.

Valuable life lessons, winsomely taught
Revisado: 09-28-15
In a world full of voices, Gracia Burnham has won the right to be heard. If you don't know her story , it would be helpful (but not necessary ) to read her first book, "In the Presence of My Enemies ." But this newest book stands very well on its own , too. Gracia is no stained-glass, too good to be true saint. She's honest, humble, and wise because of all that she has suffered , lost, and gained. She has much to teach us all.

Historia
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

So glad this story could finally be told!
Revisado: 05-22-15
What a beautiful story...so glad it didn't remain "classified" forever!
I love biographies which inspire me to want to be a better person. This story of courageous kindness in a time of madness certainly fits that description. That anyone could suffer what these men suffered and still maintain good hearts is amazing. But they did, as their actions proved.
The narration ranged from "adequate" to "good," with the lower marks for the unfortunate attempts at German accents. But I'm very finicky about accents, and others might not find it distracting as I occasionally did.
I can certainly recommend this book as a valuable addition not only to WWII history, but to human history. It's gritty and real, but warm and inspiring, too. That's quite an achievement.
