Historia
"No killing Goblins." So reads the sign outside of The Wandering Inn, a small building run by a young woman named Erin Solstice. She serves pasta with sausage, blue fruit juice, and dead acid flies on request. And she comes from another world. Ours. It's a bad day when Erin finds herself transported to a fantastical world and nearly gets eaten by a Dragon. She doesn't belong in a place where monster attacks are a fact of life, and where Humans are one species among many. But she must adapt to her new life. Or die.

Dnf at chapter 6
Revisado: 08-04-23
The premise for this story sounded really fun and I was only a little worried about the run time when it seems like a pretty fluffy premise. And then after listening, it seems the reason it’s so long is because no one told the author that repeating the same thought over and over and over again is boring and infuriating. I already found the main character annoying and couldn’t stand to listen to more of her after she idiotically cut her hand open resulting in the following dialogue: “at first it didn’t hurt. And then it hurt. It really hurt. Also she was hungry. But it hurt so bad. She was hungry and it hurt and she was tired” repeat after nauseous for several minutes. If the goal was to create a Sisyphean feeling in the reader by driving home this girl’s suffering, that would have been better conveyed using language more advanced than a magic tree house book. This clash of context vs. tone was present throughout what I managed to push myself through, being too drawn out to be funny and too simple to be serious. I cannot bring myself to slog through another 35 hours of drivel.

Historia
The remote island of Masquapaug has not seen a dragon in many generations—until fifteen-year-old Anequs finds a dragon’s egg and bonds with its hatchling. Her people are delighted, for all remember the tales of the days when dragons lived among them and danced away the storms of autumn, enabling the people to thrive. To them, Anequs is revered as Nampeshiweisit—a person in a unique relationship with a dragon.

The best historical fantasy I’ve read in ages
Revisado: 07-24-23
The story of best girl Anequs is full of nuance and light, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and have to sit through scenes of bullying or assault and I can’t say how I’m relieved that neither happen within these pages. People in power are nuanced and doing what they perceive as their best to help underdogs in a hostile world but aren’t perfect and are written with their imperfection and prejudice on full display. Characters that might have been relegated to window dressing and animosity are realistically depicted as full people in their own rights. My only regret with having read this as an audiobook rather than written is that I don’t inherently know how to spell everyone’s names and titles because vaguely Norse (a choice of ethnicity with fascinating implications for how colonialism unfolded in this universe) and pointedly indigenous don’t come as easily to my mind as anglicized spellings. I am incredibly eager for book 2 and wish i had read this book a few years from now just so i could immediately jump into the next volume instead of having to wait.

Historia
Zahru has long dreamed of leaving the kingdom of Orkena and having the kinds of adventures she's only ever heard about in stories. But as a lowly Whisperer, her power to commune with animals means that her place is serving in the royal stables until the day her magic runs dry. All that changes when the ailing ruler invokes the Crossing. A death-defying race across the desert, in which the first of his heirs to finish - and take the life of a human sacrifice at the journey's end - will ascend to the throne.

It’s fine
Revisado: 05-25-23
The world building is interesting and obviously Egyptian-inspired but I kept getting wildly frustrated with the main character. She’s naive and trusting which would be fine if her wants and desires weren’t spelled out over and over and over again with little to no change in how they’re stated. Every time she makes a stupid choice and calls it out as stupid I don’t sympathize with her, I just agree. Not to mention for a villain that’s painted to be deep and complex, the oldest prince is frustrating in his own right fluctuating between being written as conniving and clever and bone numbingly dense. This is the case for every royal we meet. There’s the bones of something good here but I turned up the speed of this performance in the interest of getting through it faster. The shifter is the best character put to page and it kills me she doesn’t have more screen time, nor does the Chekhov’s Fire Horse in the early chapters who shows up to never be seen again like you would assume a good planting and payoff would guarantee. I wish the time spent reiterating the main character’s lackluster Bella Swan personality was replaced with more satisfying turns of fortune.

Historia
What happens when the haggling is done and the shops are closed? When the quest has been given, the steeds saddled, and the adventurers are off to their next encounter? They keep the world running, the food cooked, and the horses shoed, yet what adventurer has ever spared a thought or concern for the Non-Player Characters? In the town of Maplebark, four such NPCs settle in for a night of actively ignoring the adventurers drinking in the tavern when things go quickly and fatally awry.

Fun romp
Revisado: 11-19-19
A real good time, you can really feel the bones of a campaign the author must have played sitting beneath this story to the point where if you know what you’re talking about it’s not hard to recognize specific spells and actions where a person actually had to roll. Glad I got

Historia
Queen Katharine has waited her entire life to wear the crown. But now that she finally has it, the murmurs of dissent grow louder by the day. There’s also the alarming issue of whether or not her sisters are actually dead - or if they’re waiting in the wings to usurp the throne. Mirabella and Arsinoe are alive, but in hiding on the mainland and dealing with a nightmare of their own: being visited repeatedly by a specter they think might be the fabled Blue Queen. Though she says nothing, her rotting, bony finger pointing out to sea is clear enough: return to Fennbirn.

Historia
Magic, romance, and adventure collide in Wandfasted, the irresistible prequel to The Black Witch: When they painted Heretics on our barn and set fire to it, I thought that was the worst it could get. Until they sent the dragons. But they didn't count on us having dragons of our own. And they certainly didn't count on Her. Our Great Mage. The Bringer of Fire. The Storm of Death. The Crow Sorceress. Our Deliverance. The Black Witch.

D'awwwwww
Revisado: 08-14-18
Fresh with the horrors of an all too real world in a fictional universe, this story gives some all too needed insight into the world we're thrust into at the start of the Black Witch. While not nearly so intricate as its forebear, this is far more intimate. I'm not going to lie, I didn't bother to read the blurb before I bought and devoured this book so I was a little confused for the first couple of chapters until I realized what was going on and was able to immerse myself fully.
