A tedious 120+ hour series
Revisado: 02-03-25
This might have been a good series had it been edited down to perhaps a quarter its length (or less). At some point it became simply an act of will, would I give up or would I get through and not waste my credits? I made it through but I’m not sure why, not much of a payoff at the end. I went from listening at 1.2x to 1.5x just to bull through this literary pablum. The characters were whiney and rarely learned/grew, the action was dull with very, very few situations where anything interesting happened. The bad guys held all the cards until the very end. Need to wrap up the story? Enter Deus ex machina with the power of love- barf. I love lengthy books with deep world-building where the best adventures take 100+ hours to complete are wonderful because i enjoy spending time with the characters and in the fantastic places. This series though? I could not WAIT to leave most of these people to their own devices(there were a few bright spots). Is this the worst series I’ve ever read? No, but it’s not worth the investment. Save your time and credits for so many other worthy fantasy sagas. If this was the one book I had on a desert island I’d burn it for warmth on night one.

Historia
It is a time of darkness, dread, and ultimate testing for the realm of Osten Ard, for the wild magic and terrifying minions of the undead Sithi ruler, Ineluki the Storm King, are spreading their seemingly undefeatable evil across the kingdom. With the very land blighted by the power of Ineluki's wrath, the tattered remnants of a once-proud human army flee in search of a last sanctuary and rallying point—the Stone of Farewell, a place shrouded in mystery and ancient sorrow.

A coming of age story where no one comes of age
Revisado: 01-10-25
I’m not sure how I can be 60+ hours into a series and the main character is still a whiney little baby who has gained zero maturity or skills despite trials, teachers, and mentors consistently ring in his life. There was potential in that there was an intention to not be too formulaic. That potential however failed to ignite in anything even approaching something interesting. The best 2 characters in this series are a troll and a wolf. This lemon isn’t worth the squeeze.

Couldn’t finish, dull and unenjoyable
Revisado: 09-25-24
I almost never give up on an audiobook. But this was just boring. I’m not sure if I have ever cared less for the characters in a book. No intrigue, no action, no camaraderie, slight attempt at politics. It’s really just a dry explanation of things. Imagine someone reading a recipe for hours on end, that’s how interesting this is. How is it that this dude has a supercomputer aiding him but all it does is show an alternate probability of something just as boring as what he is doing? Lamest deus ex machina ever.

Minimal story heavily wrapped in social commentary
Revisado: 09-10-24
I was expecting a crime thriller with elements of race that added realism and even provoked thought. What I got was a near constant and preachy history lesson. The only purpose of the mediocre story was to create yet another a chance for a weighty, moralistic lesson that prays on white guilt. Truly I am not exaggerating when I say nearly every single interaction, regardless of import, is twisted into an opportunity to club the reader over the head with an exposition about as subtle as an anvil on race in America. A bludgeon used sparingly can get the reader’s attention, overused it just becomes numbing. Then consider the large number of side stories that go nowhere and one dimensional characters. Racist southerners-check. Salt of the earth black victims-check. Brutal law men with no respect for the law- check. Yawn. I’m not sure what this book was meant to be but it sure as heck isn’t an interesting crime novel.

Historia
Lush and deceptively tranquil, with its pristine beaches and blossoming vegetation, the island basks in splendid isolation off the South Carolina coast. Here, where sudden storms unleash the murderous rage of wind and sea, stands the Devereaux mansion, a once-great plantation house now crumbling amid ancient oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Here, Marguerite Devereaux, 50 and childless, has cast off her dreams to care for her aged, demanding mother.

I finished it but barely.
Revisado: 08-01-24
It’s strange how I am much more accepting of the fantastic than I am of poorly written characters. Specifically, the good characters in this book so clearly physically outmatched the bad character and yet end up dead through convenient stupidity or poor reaction times. I dunno, this feels like a story someone wrote for their college English comp class and no one edited for credibility. The only real suspense I’d waiting for another character to do something dumb so they can die. I paid $3 for it and my anger kept me awake on a road trip, so that’s a win I suppose.

Not the best Dragonlance story but a worthy entry. The narrator sounds like an AI bot programmed to read like a 12 year old female. She also mispronounced “Majere” a million times.

Poor narrator, story was pretty good
Revisado: 12-11-22
Imagine an AI bot in the form of a 13 year old girl who mispronounces words like “liches” and “Majere” while simultaneously being perfectly deadpan. Well that would be this narrator.
I listened because I like Dragonlance and of course Tasselhoff is a favorite but the narration was grating.

Great story, awful narration
Revisado: 09-07-22
Re-reading these after many years. The story is still fun and the characters great. Fantasy from a simpler time but I still like it.
The narrator is awful. In my Freshman English class they made us read aloud. This narrator reminds me of the frat guy trying his best but failing. His pronunciation of “Tas”, “Caramon”, “Otik”, and others was like nails on a chalk board. His attempt at voices is laughable. Maybe he’s the son of someone at the publishing house because this dude is not good.

Reader attended the “William Shatner School for overacting”
Revisado: 07-24-21
Story is an adequate and playful adventure (kind of like a Saturday Morning cartoon fantasy that you watch when not much else is on but you aren’t going to remember much about it afterwards.
The audiobook performance however is next-level ludicrous. Harsh, sometimes unintelligible accents, overly the top readings provide an experience that detracts from the story. I’m going to try and stick it out if for KO other reason then I hate wasting money.
I rarely listen to a sample and on this one, I regret not doing so. Who knows, maybe listening to “WhhhhhItNNeeee FiiiiireStome” in a ridiculous brogue is your jam.
