Historia
Known for deep dives into true crime, extremist ideologies and fringe subcultures, journalist Leah Sottile turns her investigative eye toward American New Age culture. Today, tarot cards, astrology and crystals are everywhere—from Instagram and TikTok, to upscale boutiques and pricey wellness retreats. Sottile investigates how the recent surge of interest in New Age ideas speaks to a culture that is woven into the very fabric of America, and how self-professed gurus like Love Has Won's Mother God and the mysterious channeler Ramtha have built devout followings because of it.

Truth really is stranger than fiction. Leah Sottile has done it again and written a great book about cults in recent history.

Sam Quinones writes another amazing book
Revisado: 02-04-25
I had listened to Dreamland, Sam Quinones’s previous book about the opioid crisis, and this book covers more of that, as well as the fentanyl crisis currently going on. Mr. Quinones combines impeccable journalism with many personal stories on all sides of this epidemic, from those in drug trafficking, the Sackler family, addicts, law enforcement, communities, families, and shows how it affects us all. Highly recommend both these books.

Historia
A string of overdoses in Colorado Springs has Detectives Joe Kenda and Lee Wilson on the lookout for a bad batch of heroin that has been cut with a drug they’ve never seen before. Meanwhile, at Springs General Hospital, Dr. Blair Moreland—the notoriously unpleasant head anesthesiologist—has found a way to feed his deepening addiction to the very same powerful new drug: fentanyl. But when Dr. Moreland starts supplying the dangerous painkiller to dealer Lula Lopez, he angers a Mexican crime syndicate and sets into motion a cycle of death and violence that threatens to engulf the entire city.

I’m loving JK’s fiction stories and hope he keeps writing them. They are based on his career and include him as a fictional character. We love JK, real or fictional!!

Historia
Rookie Det. Kenda investigates a 1975 case that begins with the murder of a beloved Colorado philanthropist and society figure whose husband, a gambler and womanizer, appears to have an air-tight alibi. Mentored by his veteran partner Det. Lee Wilson, a former Nashville singer turned skilled investigator, Kenda’s case quickly attracts attention from the FBI, CIA, and Interpol, for its similarity to a string of killings involving wealthy married women. All the murders appear to have been committed by a hired professional.

I love the way he used fictionalized versions of himself and his wife and based the book on similar or possible cases. He gets to keep the personality we all love while writing great stories.

Historia
Over 13 months in 1976-1977, four children were abducted in the Detroit suburbs, each of them held for days before their still-warm bodies were dumped in the snow near public roadsides. The Oakland County Child Murders spawned panic across southeast Michigan, triggering the most extensive manhunt in US history. Yet after less than two years, the task force created to find the killer was shut down without naming a suspect.

In-depth, informative story of the investigation of this tragic case
Revisado: 11-10-24
Ms. Keenan does a very thorough job of covering all that is known about the Oakland County Child Killer case from Michigan in the 1970s. If the police did cover for a wealthy family, sadly that would make sense, and the fact that who is now the main suspect (though that took too many years) took his own life in 1978 explains why the killings stopped. Part of it is the times—they didn’t take crimes against children as seriously as we do now, so sometimes people would not serve much or any time for assaulting or soliciting children. It’s disturbing to know how much of this type of thing goes on, and though it’s not like QAnon nut job theories, it’s still way more common and extensive than we know. I wish the OCCK victims’ families could have gotten justice.

Save your money
Revisado: 09-06-24
This book is all about how talented the author was even as a child and how great a teacher he now is. Curiously, there is little in the way of how to help those of us mere mortals who aren’t as talented. We’re somehow supposed to, as the title says, sing without thinking, yet a lot of work goes into vocal training. I wish I could return it, but sadly, I paid cash, so I can’t.

Historia
White rural voters hold the greatest electoral sway of any demographic group in the United States, yet rural communities suffer from poor healthcare access, failing infrastructure, and severe manufacturing and farming job losses. Rural voters believe our nation has betrayed them, and to some degree, they’re right. In White Rural Rage, Tom Schaller and Paul Waldman explore why rural Whites have failed to reap the benefits from their outsize political power and why, as a result, they are the most likely group to abandon democratic norms and traditions.

Historia
The Wars of the Roses were a tumultuous period in English history, with family fighting family over the greatest prize in the kingdom—the throne of England. But what gave the eventual victor of these brutal and complex wars, Henry Tudor, the right to claim the crown? What made his Beaufort mother the great heiress of medieval England, and how exactly did an illegitimate line come to challenge the English monarchy? This book uncovers the rise of the Beauforts and tracks their fall during the 1460s and 1470s.

Revisado: 07-27-24
Loved the entire book. I just wish the narrator could pronounce “assume” and “pursue” correctly. These words have no “h” in the word which would make them sound like, “a-shume” or “pur-shue,” as the narrator says. If you are going to read audiobooks for a living, please pronounce the words correctly—not a big ask.
