I loved how based in physics and biology and chemistry this is, I’ve recommended the book to my physics students, it basically covers a whole intro mechanics course!

Written scifi with elements of horror are rare, and this one does it beautifully. It feels ready to be made into a movie the likes of Sunshine.

This fills in some of the gaps on Ashoka’s life between Clone Wars and Rebels, and is narrated by her voice actress. I’m not entirely clear who the audience is supposed to be though, as parts feel like cute YA, but then there’s significant violence and death. So parents may wish to screen before children read, depending on your child’s maturity level.

Moren’s second novel builds and expands upon the first. The plot thickens as compared to his first book, and the hints of a galactic conspiracy at the end leave the reader wanting more.

Refreshing pacifism vs tired noble savage trope

This book maintains an interesting tension between a new take on war and colonialism that shows how radical pacifism can wear down even the most militaristic society, and yet another noble savage and mystical magical moon women trope-fest in which the life-sciences gifted race of women manage to enlighten just a few individuals raised under a male regime of power. The story raises so many questions about the larger galactic society outside the double planets of the main characters. I would read more in this universe or by this author.

A very appropriative Christmas

I was disappointed how the first story included a caricature of Chinese people, and the second took an “Indian” folk story (unclear if South Asian Indian or Native American Indian) and turned it into a Christmas parable. The Dickens story was a cute winter ghost story though, and the improv caroling was entertaining.

Unexpectedly steeped with misogyny

The description fails to mention that the premise is that all MEN and boys can read each others’ thoughts, and that there are no women or girls in Prentisstown. The book is filled with unsurprising twists and turns steeped in gender essentialism, misogyny, and gender-based violence. The narrator, Todd, fights these cliches, but even so it’s not a setting I enjoy reading and I was disappointed to see this was the entire point of the book. This is what my everyday life is like, why would I want it in fiction that I’m reading for fun and escapism?

Race matters

This hooked me from the very first scene. It has the feel of Star Trek, but if Star Trek acknowledged that race matters, and that even a star faring humanity will have diverse cultures within the species. And then the main character Bindi uses her unique cultural perspectives, traditions, and even cosmetics, to prevent galactic war and genocide. This is just beautiful.

The Great American Novel

Road trips, ex-cons, death of a wife, cheating spouses, immigrants, melting pot of races, salad bowl of cultures, moral quandaries, loyalty to employers/friends/family, ice fishing, war, Native Americans, cars, generational culture wars, and clashing religions, all this wrapped up in a story written by a white male English ex-pat, about a hopeless man who just keeps on keeping on because he doesn't know what else to do. If this isn't the Great American Novel, I don't know what is.

A lot happens but they don't make any progress

The party learns much, exploring the next wallfold, developing their powers, meeting more expendables, finding out the differences between the different colonies, learning more about the starship's captain Ram Odin, spending some 2-3 years, and meeting new Big Bads. But despite this the overall plot makes little progress, and at the end we're left without any sense of closure and needing the next sequel. OSC's attempt to show Rig, Umbo, and Param's passage through puberty just shows perry children arguing, and what character development happens just makes them more obviously stand-ins for Ender, Bean, and Petra, respectively. Those were groundbreaking characters in Ender's Game, but by now they're old hat. Read this is you like world building and exploration of their powers, because the characters and plot will leave you unsatisfied.
