Historia
Lloyd Salter has OCD issues with noise and mess, and he's uncomfortable with human interaction. When his ex claimed the only thing perfect enough to live up to his standards was an android, Lloyd dismissed it. SATinc is the largest manufacturer of androids in Australia, including the Fully Compatible Units known as an A-Class 10. Their latest design is the Synthetic Human Android UNit, otherwise known as SHAUN. Shaun is compatible to Lloyd's every need; the perfect fit on an intellectual and physical basis. But Lloyd soon realizes Shaun's not like other A-Class androids.

Historia
A year has passed since the Dark Wizard Myrin attempted to take control of the Kingdom of Verania. Though the scars of the final battle remain, Veranians have come together in unity in order to rebuild. Good King Anthony sits on the throne once more, with Morgan of Shadows at his side. However, a king is not immortal. One day, Anthony will step down, paving the way for his son, Grand Prince Justin, to assume the throne. And Justin wants anything but. Unfortunately for him, he finds himself with bigger things to worry about than just becoming the ruler of a country.

The prince's story, not Sam's
Revisado: 03-28-25
I don't regret listening. But at first I was annoyed. I think it's worth knowing in advance that Sam and Ryan (and the rest) are secondary characters. This is Prince Justin's story: the Ice Prince. So it takes a while to warm up.

Things have gone bad among the colonies. Insurgents are building alien-hybrid armies and planet-killing weapons, threatening to upend the fragile balance of power in Province 921. There's not only trouble in the province—the Core Worlds are igniting as well. The Mogwa have asserted claims upon the Imperial Throne, causing their rivals to move against them. Earth's Hegemony and the rebels are pulled into a conflict that could tear the galaxy apart.

Continuity?!
Revisado: 03-26-25
This feels like it was written by someone else. The difference was jarring. Lots of little things add up to make it something other than what it was. And that so few reviews even mention this makes me suspicious about the use of AI at all levels.
Great narration, as always, but I think I might be done with Larson for a while. (No more automatic pre-order; if I get the next one, I'll be much more open to returning it than I have been.)

Historia
Rob didn't think of himself as anyone special, but when a pitch-black portal tried to wrap his best friend in chains, he stepped up without thinking and found himself ensnared instead. His moment of heroism results in being torn away from everyone he knew and loved, kidnapped by an unknown force that leaves him with a note in his pocket stating: "Good luck." After being thrown into the wilderness of Elatra, a hostile fantasy world ruled by levels, stats, progression, and bizarre video game logic, he finds himself entirely out of his depth.

Neil Hellegers (the performer) suggested when we chatted that I might like this series. He said it was among the best in the genre. And I agree. His performance is also excellent: if you've ever wondered if you can hear someone quirk their eyebrow, the evidence is here. (Good story too: I've already started the next one.)

Excellent medicine
Revisado: 07-03-24
"Write what you know." ALPHA does this admirably, blending LitRPG and Medicine in ways only Kong could.
The throwaway line about immortal HeLa cells? That's an allusion to Henrietta Lacks, whose cancer was cultivated and remains an important part of medical research long after her death. Kong's books are full of little details like that: stuff you only notice if you know. It's great.
I'm glad to have pre-ordered ALPHA, as I do with all of Kong's new releases. I encourage you do to the same. (I texted with him about the loud bell sound effect: they're going to fix it, and lower the volume.)
Also: Pavi is excellent. If you find him slow, speed up the playback to where you're more comfortable. And if you want a recommendation for another series that he narrates, I'm delighted to suggest Defiance of the Fall. (I'm halfway through Book 13: I pre-order those too!)

Historia
Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness. He is surrounded by Vonnegut's usual large cast of continuing characters (notably here the hack science fiction writer Kilgore Trout and the alien Tralfamadorians, who oversee his life and remind him constantly that there is no causation, no order, no motive to existence).

Stop hiring narrators for books that include languages they can't speak. Franco's German might as well be Greek for all the sense it makes. I couldn't do it.

Historia
Four hundred years from now mankind is strung out across a region of interstellar space inherited from an ancient civilization discovered on Mars. The colonies are linked together by the occasional sublight colony ship voyages and hyperspatial data-casting. Human consciousness is digitally freighted between the stars and downloaded into bodies as a matter of course.

Watch the TV show instead
Revisado: 01-27-24
Lots of interesting ideas. But the sex was awkward: it felt shoehorned in to make the story "more adult." It was mechanical and out of place.
Unlike a lot of the other ideas, the sex wasn't really used: yes, our digital soul is at the mercy of our base physical body. And sometimes the body makes demands of its own. (I understand.) This just wasn't followed-through sufficiently.
The made-for-TV version missed some cool extra details and twists. But it also added some. The characterization of the hotel-AI, for example, is better on screen than in the book. So is the history of the Envoys.
The narration is awkward at times. There are gaps between speakers in conversations that feel overly long. Sometimes I even wondered if my phone had crashed. If the intent was to make the listener wonder if the narrator/MC was a "synth," Bladerunner did it better.
I'm not going to continue with this series. Nor will I seek out the narrator. But I will continue to explore the author's other works. (I liked the series that starts with The Steel Remains: very adult, but fantasy rather than sci-fi.)

Historia
Minalan the Spellmonger has come a long way since he woke up to a goblin invasion almost a decade ago. Since then, he has built cities and mighty armies, invented new enchantments, and pioneered entirely new fields of magic. Now that the Witch Queen of Darkfaller has taken over one of the most powerful castles in the center of the kingdom, he has to marshal all his resources—political, military, and arcane—to try to drive her from the strategic and symbolically important stronghold.

Historia
Few know the warship’s actual name. But everyone has heard the rumors. The PUV James Keeling can do something no other vessel in existence can do—slip into another dimension, travel undetected, then re-emerge onto our plane and surprise enemy targets. But the thing that makes the Crypt unique also makes it a nightmare for those onboard; interdimensional travel causes hallucinations, violent behavior, and psychotic breakdowns. Keeling could be the Union’s greatest weapon, a game-changing asset that can defeat the bloodthirsty zealots of the Purist Nation, the Union’s mortal enemy.
