Historia
In this audiobook, The Human Odyssey, we explore the evolution of those characteristics that make us human. The first section looks at our family tree and why some branches survived and not others. Swings in climate are emerging as a factor in what traits succeeded and failed; meanwhile, DNA analyses show that Homo sapiens interbred with other human species, which played a key role in our survival.

Great selection of human evolution articles (2016)
Revisado: 11-13-20
This is a great selection of articles on human evolution. While they are written for the public, the science is up to date (as of 2016, since that's when this issue was published). It's rather like listening to a set of short lectures by different scientists (albeit all given in the same voice) on some of the current issues in paleoanthropology. Highly recommended for those who (like me) have exhausted most of Audible's works on paleoanthrpology and are looking for something new. If you're more of a beginner, I might suggest a few other titles first (e.g. The Rise of Humans by John Hawks). Kate Mulligan (narrator) does a nice job of reading the articles aloud and only makes a couple minor mispronunciations that aren't distracting or annoying. Her narration is easy to follow and at a good pace for following the information.

Historia
The tradition of ancient philosophy is a long, rich and varied one, in which the notes of discussion and argument constantly resound. This book introduces ancient debates, engaging us with the ancient developments of their themes. Moving away from the presentation of ancient philosophy as a succession of great thinkers, the book gives readers a sense of the freshness and liveliness of ancient philosophy, and of its wide variety of themes and styles.

The pronunciation will make you roll your eyes
Revisado: 01-01-20
I'm a huge fan of Julia Annas's work and I decided to listen to this to hear some of her thoughts written for a more popular audience. The book itself is a charming introduction for a non-scholar, which provides more nuanced insights than most easily accessible works on ancient philosophy. The narration is a little bit ridiculous. While the intonation is generally fine, the pronunciation of terms and names of very famous philosophical figures is downright embarrassing and the studio/editor/narrator should be ashamed for passing these incorrect pronunciations on to an audience who might not know any better (given the target audience for the work).
In short, if you want to know a little about ancient philosophy, listen to this book! But make sure you check pronunciations of the new you hear on Wikipedia or somewhere before you discuss it with anyone.

Historia
What do you want to be when you grow up? It's a familiar question we're all asked as kids. While seemingly harmless, the question has unintended consequences. It can make you feel like you need to choose one job, one passion, one thing to be about. Guess what? You don't. Having a lot of different interests, projects and curiosities doesn't make you a "jack-of-all-trades, master of none". Your endless curiosity doesn't mean you are broken or flaky.

Historia
Epistemic vices are character traits, attitudes, or thinking styles that prevent us from gaining, keeping, or sharing knowledge. In this book, Quassim Cassam gives an account of the nature and importance of these vices, which include closed-mindedness, intellectual arrogance, wishful thinking, and prejudice. In providing the first extensive coverage of vice epistemology, an exciting new area of philosophical research, Vices of the Mind uses real examples drawn primarily from the world of politics to develop a compelling theory of epistemic vice.

Great, Clear Introduction to Vice Epistemology
Revisado: 08-07-19
This book was an enjoyable listen. Cassam is clear and precise, but accessible and engaging. I think I may use sections of the printed version for a philosophy course that I'm teaching this fall.

Great basics for budgeting for those just starting
Revisado: 05-06-19
I hate to admit it, but I've never had a budget. I totally overspent my freshman year in college (a long time ago) and it scared me into saving a lot of my money. And that worked for over 10 years. But now, I have much bigger financial decisions to make and I was budget clueless. however I used this audiobook and the YNAB app (I will convert to a spreadsheet at some point possibly, but for nke, I'm ok paying a small fee per month for something preset with the system described. so far, much more intuitive than anything else over tried. More importantly, I can save and simultaneously do more with my money than J thought (since I'm being more vigilant about impulse buying). For anyone just starting out (even if you're over 30), YNAB is great!

Historia
In recent years, the common perception of the Neanderthals has been transformed, thanks to new discoveries and paradigm-shattering scientific innovations. It turns out that the Neanderthals' behavior was surprisingly modern: they buried the dead, cared for the sick, hunted large animals in their prime, harvested seafood, and communicated with spoken language. Meanwhile, advances in DNA technologies are compelling us to reassess the Neanderthals' place in our own past.

Great introduction to Neanderthals and paleoanthropology! There are a few things slightly out of date because of the speed of discovery. However, a fun and well organized audiobook that should be accessible to all!

Historia
In Darujhistan, the city of blue blue fire, it is said that Love and Death shall arrive dancing. It is summer, and the heat is oppressive, but for the small, rotund man in the faded red waistcoat discomfiture is not just because of the sun. All is not well. Dire portents plague his nights and haunt the city streets like fiends of shadow. Assassins skulk in alleyways, but the quarry has turned, and the hunters become the hunted. Hidden hands pluck the strings of tyranny like a fell chorus.

Not as good as Reaper's Gale, but still great
Revisado: 01-27-19
I love this series. This book was not as good as the three books that preceded it (Midnight Tides, The Bonehunters, and Reaper's Gale are all fantastic), but it still had some amazing stuff in it. I'm glad the story lead back to Darujhistan. it has a great cast of characters. Enjoy!

Dinosaurs & History of Science
Revisado: 12-25-18
I really enjoyed this book. It's a great blend of history of science (and ideas) coupled with careful assessment of findings from a working paleontologist. Highly recommended for anyone who likes dinosaurs, the history of science, or 19th century intellectual history. Accessible for a public audience (although it helps if you have some vague background in 19th century Britain and/or acquaintance with marine reptiles)

Historia
The Seven Cities Rebellion has been crushed. Sha’ik is dead. One last rebel force remains, holed up in the city of Y’Ghatan and under the fanatical command of Leoman of the Flails. The prospect of laying siege to this ancient fortress makes the battle-weary Malazan Fourteenth Army uneasy. For it was here that the Empire’s greatest champion, Dassem Ultor, was slain and a tide of Malazan blood spilled. A place of foreboding, its smell is of death. But elsewhere, agents of a far greater conflict have made their opening moves.

Another great Malazan book
Revisado: 12-15-18
The Malazan Book of the Fallen (series) is a great fantasy series for intelligent people. Erikson loves dropping hints to let you solve the puzzles before big reveals (which he does in a fresh, fun way each time so it doesn't feel formulaic. Erikson delivers another great book. Lots of favorite characters are back (many did not appear in Misnight Tides). Love this series!
in particular, this narrator did a great job with Telorast and Curdle. Particularly the beginning of chapter 2 (I think it's chapter 3 in the audiobook) there is a fabulous comedic moment. He does the comedy very well!

Best epic fantasy novel I have ever read
Revisado: 11-11-18
This is an amazing book! It is fast-paced, the characters are well-designed and complex, there are many plot-lines that intersect at various (often unexpected) places. This material is dark-- but fascinating. Erikson also manages to sprinkle levity and fist-pumping moments throughout. I highly suggest reading Gardens of the Moon first (it's the first book in the series), because it will make Deadhouse Gates richer and more engaging.
As a warning, like any of Erikson's Malazan main books (I'm not including the Bauchelain and Korbal Broach novellas) require some focus. That means, you can't just listen to them-- you will need a paper copy with Dramatis Personae and Glossary to follow along. You also have to pay attention in order to understand what is happening and solve the puzzles that Erikson includes. However, Erikson rewards his audience for their attention by writing an incredible story so it is well worth the effort.
