Nicola Walker rises above the material
Revisado: 01-08-25
An okay plot that suffers from melodrama and tedium. In the hands of a better writer, this might’ve been a corker. As it is though? Meh.

Underwhelmed
Revisado: 12-19-24
The New York Times review of “God of the Woods” was enthusiastic, and it’s been recommended in several published lists. I guess they oversold it. I liked Liz Moore’s short stories and had high hopes for this new novel, but I was, frankly, underwhelmed. The writing is good, but, taken as a whole, “God of the Woods” fell short of my expectations.

Historia
Jacob Finch Bonner was once a promising young novelist with a respectably published first book. Today, he’s teaching in a third-rate MFA program and struggling to maintain what’s left of his self-respect; he hasn’t written—let alone published—anything decent in years. When Evan Parker, his most arrogant student, announces he doesn’t need Jake’s help because the plot of his book in progress is a sure thing, Jake is prepared to dismiss the boast as typical amateur narcissism. But then...he hears the plot.

Waiting to learn whodunit
Revisado: 11-25-24
The critical reviews were excellent. I was very disappointed. 1) narrator only so-so. 2) ironically, the plot was stolen. (This novel is about a blocked writer who steals someone else’s plot line). I’m just one person, and off the top of my head I can name 3 published works with the same plot that I’ve read. How many other people are aware of how many more examples? For the record: “Envy” by Sandra Brown, “Yellowface” by RF Kuang, and “Deathtrap” by the master, Ira Levin — the latter both a successful Broadway play and then a successful movie, with Michael Caine and Christopher Reeves.

Historia
Is the Constitution a living document that needs to evolve with the times? Or should we try to divine the original meaning that our Founding Fathers intended, and hew to that as strictly as possible, as present-day originalists suggest? In The Year of Living Constitutionally, A.J. Jacobs tries to get inside the minds of the Founding Fathers by living as closely as possible to the original meaning of the Constitution.

Quite informative
Revisado: 11-12-24
I thought I knew what the Constitution said and meant. Turns out I had a lot to learn. The author narrates all his audiobooks. Perhaps a more euphonious voice would improve the listening experience. Jacobs is a very good writer. An elocutionist, he is not.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

A race for glory and for freedom
Revisado: 08-08-24
“Horse” tells the story of the greatest racehorse and stud of the 19th century and of the enslaved people who made his incredible success possible. The horse of the title is Liberty, and his story is the hook that connects the antebellum South to 1950s New York and 2019 Washington.
Geraldine Brooks gets deep into the essence of every character’s personality, and so the reader quickly becomes invested in the telling of their lives. It becomes clear very quickly that this is true not just of the people who populate the novel, but also the horses, and the art that captures them.
From a brief glance at a synopsis, a prospective reader might think that “Horse” isn’t a meaningful choice. That would be a mistake. As it says in the Afterword, “Horse” is as much about race as it is about racehorses. In this era of cultural and racial divisiveness, this is no small matter.
“Horse” gives us the sense of exhilaration that comes from racing, and also from the creation and wonder of art. As always, Ms Brooks has written a compelling narrative that is hard to put down.

A Masterwork of Fiction
Revisado: 10-08-23
Unique in its concept and brilliant in accomplishment, “Hamnet” is a master work of fiction. The prose is positive lyrical, unlike any other novel that comes to mind.
How the author succeeds in creating fully dimensional characters, based on scarce knowledge of real people, is remarkable. As I listened, I was taken back to the 16th century, as if I were an observer of events as they happened.
Without ever mentioning either the first or last name of William Shakespeare, Ms O’Farrell has given us a believable account of his life as it was lived. I read it, and I still don’t know how she did it. A remarkable accomplishment, a beautiful book.

Dragged me in and kept me
Revisado: 09-27-23
Even though this novel gets off to a slow start and I found the story a bit predictable, I couldn’t stop listening. Saskia Maarleveld is a really talented narrator. And the author found a way to make every character unique and then build a plot in which they all are tied together.
Altogether, a good read.
