Superb

Waugh's best book, superbly read by the narrator. I highly recommend the book and this audio version to anyone who relishes irony, and to students of personal decline and madness.

The voice of Flashman (& Elspeth)
Revisado: 08-04-08
This volume of the Flashman memoirs contains two superb stories (Baccarat & Tiger) and one that's much less captivating (the first and longest, about Franz Joseph). But all three stories are immensely enjoyable for one reason: the narrator has captured the voice of Flashman perfectly. He also does a very good Elspeth. I can only hope that David Case will some day narrate the best of the Flashman books: Flash for Freedom.

Historia
Discover magazine recently called Richard Dawkins "Darwin's Rottweiler" for his fierce and effective defense of evolution. Prospect magazine voted him among the top three public intellectuals in the world (along with Umberto Eco and Noam Chomsky). Now Dawkins turns his considerable intellect on religion, denouncing its faulty logic and the suffering it causes.

Poorly written & poorly narrated
Revisado: 06-26-08
I had heard much about Dawkins, of course, and read a bit of his stuff, but this book was a complete surprise: poorly reasoned, terribly written, and narrated by the author (with ghastly asides by a woman narrator) in a tone of voice dripping with condescension and impatience. Not only does he not "prove" the non-existence of God (an impossibility anyway), he completely fails to grasp the psychological complexity of religious belief, or come to terms with the odd human characteristic of the will to believe in something beyond ourselves.

Historia
"Laddie...write my biography. Bung it down on paper...at a conservative estimate, we should clean up at least 50,000 pounds apiece." Thus spake Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge to his long-suffering friend Corky Corcoran. Corky, whose literary efforts to date have consisted of weekly newspaper articles of the type, "Should Curates Kiss?" and a single music hall song, "Mother, She's Pinching My Leg," is reluctant.

A fine collection, but incomplete
Revisado: 06-26-08
Brilliantly narrated, as usual, by Frederick Davidson, this collection of Ukridge stories is entertaining & uplifting. However, the best of the Ukridge stories, and one of the best of Wodehouse's short stories, is missing: "A bit of luck for Mabel."

Historia
Generally considered to be his masterpiece, Vanity Fair is Thackeray's resplendent social satire that exposes the greed and corruption raging in England during the turmoil of the Napoleonic wars. Subtitled "A Novel Without a Hero", it traces the changing fortunes of two unforgettable women: the scheming opportunist Becky Sharp, one of literature's most resourceful, engaging, and amoral heroines, and her foil, the faithful, naive Amelia Sedley.

Excellent
Revisado: 04-17-08
Thackeray's prose doesn't always come across easily in narration; his sentences can twist and turn leaving the listener rather unsure of where he started. But, overall, the narrator does an incredible job with the book. Davidson has a distinct voice for each character, and some of them are brilliant. He captures Thackeray's ironic and sarcastic tone wonderfully. I highly recommend this audio version, although the experience can be improved at times by having a copy of the book at hand, to read along through some of the more intricate bits of prose.

Brilliant narration
Revisado: 03-03-08
Simon Vance performs a truly amazing narration of one of Trollope's best books. Vance gives to each character a distinctive voice; none is campy or too affected, and each is appropriate to the character. Highly recommended.
