Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Memorable, outstanding, breathtaking
Revisado: 12-15-23
On every level of literature, this is a classic. The unique characters will stay with me forever. The range of emotions is so great and the multiple plot lines through the generations all converge into a single point in the end so exquisitely that not a single detail is in excess. I happily listened to some parts multiple times and would love to reread this book in its entirety. I purchased the hard copy, but the performer-author is so good that I actually recommend the Audible version for the best experience.
A true winner. Allow yourself some spcae to totally immerse yourself in this experience.

Historia
Louis-Ferdinand Celine's revulsion and anger at what he considered the idiocy and hypocrisy of society explodes from nearly every minute of this novel. Filled with slang and obscenities and written in raw, colloquial language, Journey to the End of the Night is a literary symphony of violence, cruelty, and obscene nihilism. This book shocked most critics when it was first published in France in 1932, but quickly became a success with the public in Europe, and later in America.

The Ending is memorable
Revisado: 07-10-23
I had some trouble entering the mindset of the first-person narrator at the beginning, but in the end, I can appreciate why this is a classic. And it is read by the performer magnificently.
The ending is like a great painting that I will never forget. I find myself replaying that last chapter in awe as it pulls all the threads together into a cohesive whole.

Historia
Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music.

Outstanding book and production
Revisado: 06-15-23
Well written, excellent performance by JD Jackson. Great characters—I really felt for the main character both his triumphs and his ordeals. And I loved Grandma Nora. The audible production interspersed with music was really outstanding and so enhanced the experience. Highly recommended. Begs to be shared.

Historia
Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. In the taverna, hidden beneath garlands of garlic, chili peppers and creeping honeysuckle, Kostas and Defne grow in their forbidden love for each other. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, and this tree bears witness to their hushed, happy meetings and eventually, to their silent, surreptitious departures. The tree is there when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, and when the teenagers vanish.

Even better the second time
Revisado: 05-11-23
After reading 2 other novels by Elif Shafak, I circled back to The Island of Missing Trees again. It’s even better the second time! I really loved the voice and style of the fig tree as first-person narrator. Powerful beautifully told story of individuals caught in the middle with the fig-tree connecting all the loose ends. Excellent selection for a book group discussion.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Historia
Cambridge professor Emily Wilde is good at many things: She is the foremost expert on the study of faeries. She is a genius scholar and a meticulous researcher who is writing the world’s first encyclopaedia of faerie lore. But Emily Wilde is not good at people. She could never make small talk at a party—or even get invited to one. And she prefers the company of her books, her dog, Shadow, and the Fair Folk to other people. So when she arrives in the hardscrabble village of Hrafnsvik, Emily has no intention of befriending the gruff townsfolk.

Great Fantasy Escape
Revisado: 03-09-23
I love everything about this audible book: characters, setting(s), details of description, use of language(s), style of storytelling and stories within the main narrative, quests, humor, and especially the wonderful narration--this is meant to be read aloud, The performance is a rich enhancement to the experience.
Although I don't regularly read Fantasy, Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries will rank as a classic, I'm certain. This book is an argument as to the healing potential of the Fantasy genre. If you are going through a stressful time, you may find that you pick up one book after another but nothing grabs you. Emily Wilde, however, will draw you into such an all-absorbing world of new problem-solving, beloved characters including her big dog Shadow and of course Wendell, and brilliantly pictured winter scenes that you will leave your old baggage behind and follow along in and out of the world of Fae.
In Audible or in the hard copy of a book as in the world of Faeries, time can fortunately be rewound. Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries Book 1 is worth listening to a second or third time. I hope that there will be a Book 2 soon.

Despite the inferior sound at. Times, I personally really enjoyed this Victorian novel.
The memorable characters really opened a new world for me.
Give it some time. I would rank it with Wilie Collins’ The Woman in White.
