Historia
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

Slow beginning
Revisado: 08-26-24
First off, I love Lily Cho. Her books are great slices of life romances. I also love that she’s able to connect her stories slyly for the reader’s enjoyment, even though all of her books can be stand-alones.
The build up for this newest book was very slow. It felt slightly uncomfortable, and I almost put the book down. I kept reading though, because I know I love Lilly‘s work. I am very glad I kept reading because once the book was set up, it was a very enjoyable experience.
Part of me also wonders if I found the set up awkward because I had recently read Evelyn Hugo. Although the storylines are similar, the story itself is very different and I think I was trying to compare the two books.
The narration was fantastic, and I did not have any issues with the way it was edited. Both narrators read around the same speed.

Too many time jumps
Revisado: 07-05-24
It was messed up. I didn’t start liking it until Rose came onto the scene. The smut is too slow, and there wasn’t enough tension for how slow it was. Also, there are too many time breaks, and it felt choppy.

Historia
After defeating the terrifying Necromuse and his mysterious orchestra, all Amelia Jones hopes for is a return to normal. But to her surprise, her class is sent to Europe for a month of study abroad. This seems like the perfect escape from all her problems, but not long after they land in Salzburg, Austria, danger haunts their steps. A street musician claims there is something wrong with Amelia’s magic, odd visions of the past appear around the city, and Amelia finds a strange message preserved in a museum—a message she fears was left by the Necromuse.

Beautiful
Revisado: 05-05-24
I was already a big fan of this author and the production behind this audiobook series. The story holds up to the last 2 1/2 books that have been produced for the series. The interweaving of Susie Jackson’s narration and the live orchestra is truly stunning.
Jessica Khoury does a fantastic job with making you feel the emotions her main characters are feeling. I laughed, I cried.
Chapter 36 is a masterpiece and I cannot wait to see the fan art that comes out of it!
If you’re looking to read a book with your kids, this is the perfect book. I would suggest eight years old and older purely because of the magic system and some of the emotional issues, the characters deal with.
Anyone with even a slight appreciation of classical music should read this book series!!
Bravo Jessica Khoury. Bravo.
My only con is I feel like the cover art is not as strong as the other books in the series. The artist could have pushed themselves a little bit more.

Historia
Eleven-year-old Ella Durand is the first Conjuror to attend the Arcanum Training Institute, a magic school in the clouds where Marvellers from around the world practice their cultural arts, like brewing Indian spice elixirs and bartering with pesky Irish pixies. Despite her excitement, Ella discovers that being the first isn’t easy—some Marvellers mistrust her magic, which they deem “bad and unnatural.” But eventually, she finds friends in elixirs teacher, Masterji Thakur, and fellow misfits Brigit, a girl who hates magic, and Jason, a boy with a fondness for magical creatures.

Storytelling with a sprinkle of truth
Revisado: 03-15-24
I absolutely loved the fantastic world of the Marvellers. The author did a great job of sprinkling in bits of truth about African-American history, while not making the real history stand out from the fantastic story.

Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. Haunted by visions of the Fairy King since childhood, she’s had no choice. Her tattered copy of Angharad—Emrys Myrddin’s epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King, then destroys him—is the only thing keeping her afloat. SA!
Revisado: 11-07-23
Strong ptsd from SA warning. Very emotionally heavy. The fae aspect is fun to fritter out, but there not enough lightness in the story to not have you feeling hallow once it’s over.
*Could* be useful if you’ve experienced SA and need a story to latch onto about overcoming your fear and frustration.

Historia
It’s two months before Amelia’s big audition for the Mystwick School of Musicraft. If she gets in, she will learn to spin music into powerful magic - but her Gran has one last-ditch plan to persuade her out of it: sports camp. A week of softball, sprinting, and sweaty socks isn't exactly Amelia’s idea of a good time - in fact, she's deeply, appallingly unathletic. By the end of day one, she’s puked her guts out in track, gotten a black eye in no-contact flag football, and firmly established herself as the Least Valuable Player at camp.
