Good, but forced

Total
3 out of 5 stars

This book lacks the rebellious innocence and honesty of Kitchen Confidential and seems apologetic and heavily defensive at times. An over-the-top love fest in parts that would have had the old Tony puking on his cowboy boots. Still, Bourdain is a good storyteller and his dry, caustic sense of humor makes it worth a listen, even as he's become part of the pop-food scene he used to rail against.

This book is fantastic on so many levels - great stories, humor, self-discovery, love of the outdoors, American history - and Bryson at his best narrating. I have listened to it multiple times. The only problem is that it's too short.

Unless you really like Australia, start with one of his other books. A few great parts, but some lulls.

Recommended by a friend. Starts slow, but turns into a great story. Stick with it and you'll be happy you did. A book you'll want to talk to people about.

Only made it through because I suffer from chronic pain, but I deeply appreciated the work that went into it. There are a few insights that have helped me. Never connected with the author/narrator.

A little slow, but stick with it

Wasn't prepared for the character voices and music, but wound up enjoying it. Tend to prefer something faster moving, but wound up enjoying this. If I could, I'd give it 3.5 stars.

Dated. Narrator drones. Tried three times. If you're circling back to books you should have read in high school, skip this one.

You don't need to be a Stones fan or a pop culture lover to like this book. Richard's insights are fascinating and very well thought out -- you'll think of him completely differently after this candid recounting of his life. Highly recommended; enjoyed all three voices.

Takes a while to get used to the narrator, and I was looking for a Carlin monologue. A good story and listen, but know what you're getting.
