Historia
The orphaned Elsie Camden learned as a girl that there were two kinds of wizards in the world: those who pay for the power to cast spells and those, like her, born with the ability to break them. But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain.

Jarring, just jarring
Revisado: 10-30-21
I am not done with this book, I haven't probably gotten that far into listening to it. The story and background is keeping my attention and Elizabeth Knowelden does a good job of narration, however Mr Froomkin starts his section and it's bad, really bad. I was hoping it was just one character, but no. Everyone he's voiced sounds like a Disney villian, but without any redeeming qualities .
Hopefully I can struggle through this and give a further update

Excellent book
Revisado: 10-30-21
I like all of the Spellmonger series. This seemed a little short, ended sooner than I wanted . Do not take that as a bad thing. It's more along the lines of getting caught up with the storyline and not realizing how far along I am.
Hopefully there will be a couple more books, similar to the Hawkmaiden series.
Narrator was excellent! You know a narrator is good when you don't notice their gender, meaning they can describe a scene or relay dialogue that allows you to get wrapped up in what is going on and not being distracted the person telling the story with their delivery being out of place. The story becomes the central focus and a skilled narrator becomes almost invisible as it were.
All of the narrators for the Spellmonger series are incredibly skilled, unfortunately for other narrators this is the bar I've set my standard to.
I have had the recent misfortune of starting another author's fantasy series where there are dual narrators doing different chapters. The female narrator was rather good. However the male narrator had every person sound like a pompous jerk, voiced by very bad (not evil, just poorly done) Disney villian .

What am I missing?
Revisado: 03-12-21
Finished the book and slightly changing my review (semi-spoilers), the MC has no redeeming values. Between his self loathing, acting like a smug bully even though he thinks he's cheating ALL of the time, worse is his demeanor when he beats someone through actually cheating. He's not striving to become a better person, just obtain more power.
Mind you this also includes the constant reminder of oh how SUPER GREAT & AWESOME everyone else is every 5 minutes and how the MC is basically a waste of genetical material and breath.
Then the equivalent of a celestial overseer in stopping a higher being criminal decides to give the MC power/insight that he hasn't done anything to deserve. She even makes the comment of how she's not familiar with these beings' social dynamics, but gives him a do-over and insight anyways because he's stood up to his oppressors so often and deserves to become a great being in the universe. Oh wait he didn't... This only happens because the writer decided it should. The MC's sister is more caring, studious, and more thoughtful when it comes to planning & puts in the effort to help someone other than herself. The MC doesn't show any of these traits. She deserves being given a version of enlightenment, not him.
What's worse is after things are made "better", he becomes more of a sniveling, conniving coward. He's now fine with stealing , lying etc. to get the power he's been shown to receive. Have we added in other's people's live don't matter cause he doesn't owe them anything? He does one thing that can be considered traumatic, however because he states "this is bad/awful" it's supposed to convince the us how much he's a such a swell guy.
The Narrator needs a throat lozenge/tea whatever works. Things come across as monotone, raspy and I end up being confused when a character is supposed speaking, with the exception of the artificial voice. When general description, background details are bring conveyed etc. his dialogue is tolerable.
The story is telegraphed at times, yet he has the MC deny/state how useless an action is for great lengths of time. Other times within a few sentences everything is contradictory.
These issues combined w/ the MC being no better than anyone that oppresses him makes the story hard to follow/enjoy.

Historia
The goblin invasion is on...and a wizard's work is never done! After facing a hopeless siege, an implacable foe, and an impossible escape, you would think that Minalan the Spellmonger would be able to rest - but the armies of the undead goblin shaman Shereul (known as the Dead God to his human victims) are rolling over the Western reaches of the rustic Duchy of Alshar and is headed toward the heart of the Duchy of Castal. Thousands are fleeing for their lives as hordes of goblins pour out of Boval Vale and devastate the rugged fiefs of the Alshari Wilderlands.

Historia
What does the most powerful wizard in the world do after the war? Despite the hordes of goblins still ready to ravage human lands, King Rard has signed a treaty with them, so Minalan is forbidden from taking advantage of their weak state. Most would take a well-deserved rest over the summer…but Minalan and his household are busy repaying a favor owed to the tribal Kasari for their help in the war, and the Spellmonger pays his debts. So Minalan spends his summer sneaking 2,000 Kasari children through enemy lines and some of the roughest territory in the Five Duchies toward salvation.

Excellent book, like the rest of the series.
Narrator is excellent.
I enjoy the fact that some of the best accomplishments Min does do not rely on magic at all.
