Your favorite Captain's story
Revisado: 01-31-22
Narrated by Kate Mulgrew, this is Kathryn Janeway's autobiography. Some parts about her early life are new, others are her recollections about her experiences in the Delta quadrant, but all are enjoyable. Much like listening to an old friend talk about things you did together.

Historia
Why is it so hard to make lasting changes in our companies, in our communities, and in our own lives? The primary obstacle is a conflict that's built into our brains, say Chip and Dan Heath, authors of the critically acclaimed best seller Made to Stick. Psychologists have discovered that our minds are ruled by two different systems - the rational mind and the emotional mind - that compete for control. The rational mind wants a great beach body; the emotional mind wants that Oreo cookie.

One of the best books you'll read this year
Revisado: 11-07-15
Would you listen to Switch again? Why?
This is an excellent book on how to get yourself, others or an organization to make desirable changes in behavior. The authors' analogy of an elephant rider is helpful in both understanding and remembering how to apply the techniques they discuss, and the numerous examples of these techniques in action are both brilliant and inspiring.
What did you learn from Switch that you would use in your daily life?
The concept of the elephant rider helps to analyze the problems of instigating change and making it stick.

Historia
Amanda Lindhout reads her spectacularly dramatic memoir of a woman whose curiosity about the world led her from rural Canada to imperiled and dangerous countries on every continent, and then into 15 months of harrowing captivity in Somalia - a story of courage, resilience, and extraordinary grace. In August 2008, she traveled to Mogadishu, Somalia - "the most dangerous place on Earth." On her fourth day in the country, she and her photojournalist companion were abducted.

An engaging, moving and true story
Revisado: 09-01-14
What was one of the most memorable moments of A House in the Sky?
When she and Nigel are recaptured after their escape attempt.
Any additional comments?
A story of human survival in a situation of extreme danger and deprivation. Start it when you have plenty of time to listen - you won't want to put it down. I heard almost all of it in the same day. It is remarkable that she is able to tell her story so objectively, and even more remarkable that she has been willing to go back to Somalia after all that happened.

Fascinating story
Revisado: 05-22-14
What did you love best about Ties That Bind, Ties That Break?
Fascinating story about how one girl managed to avoid having her feet bound. Explains the background of the custom, and why it became important, as well as how she avoided it and how that choice influenced her life. Once you start, you won't want to quit until it's over.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Tradition - it's not for everyone.

If you've ever wondered about Scientology
Revisado: 05-31-13
What made the experience of listening to Beyond Belief the most enjoyable?
The first person narrative of someone growing up in the church was captivating. I wanted to see how and why she decided to leave what she was raised to believe in.
Any additional comments?
This completely answers the question about whether it's a cult. All the signs are there. Of course, that also makes it difficult to distinguish from any other religion! Enlightening description of her experiences and what makes someone begin to question the things they've been told all their lives.

Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Any additional comments?
One of the few books I have read recently that I really didn't want to put down. Fascinating story, characters that you'll like - and identify with, at least in part. As the story unfolds, your view of them will shift in unexpected ways. You'll stay up way too late listening to this one.
