Big great Manchester Book but A.I. narrator?
Revisado: 10-22-23
The writer, subject and book are excellent.
But the he narrator sounds like he/it might be either AI, a robot / or just contains portions which are badly edited in post.

Historia
Famed investigative journalist Eric Schlosser digs deep to uncover secrets about the management of America's nuclear arsenal. A groundbreaking account of accidents, near misses, extraordinary heroism, and technological breakthroughs, Command and Control explores the dilemma that has existed since the dawn of the nuclear age: How do you deploy weapons of mass destruction without being destroyed by them? That question has never been resolved - and Schlosser reveals how the combination of human fallibility and technological complexity still poses a grave risk to mankind.

Well written book on complex subject
Revisado: 08-17-23
This is a beautifully done book. The subject is complicated and the author has done a huge thing in successfully tackling it.
Well known narrator works hard at chewing every bit of scenery possible. His baseline tone here is a kind of quavering hysteria. Less would be more. But it's really the producer's job to reel that in and look out for the v.o. talent. The producer let him down in this case.
Overall, great book!

Interesting insightful entertaining
Revisado: 08-11-23
This is the best kind of audiobook, an interesting story that's linked, via the terrific narrator Culp, to the subject in his own life. An extreme character such as SP requires nuance to describe properly and this writer and narrator do it just right. Definitely recommend, great stuff. Felt like I was hanging out with the writer and with Culp, so fun. Wished it were twice as long and hated to hear it end :)

Historia
It was the election that would ultimately give America "Camelot" and its tragic aftermath. 1960 is a stunning recreation of the bare-knuckle politics of the primaries, the party conventions' backroom dealings, the unprecedented television debates, along with hot-button issues of race, religion, and foreign policy. And, at the center of it all, three future presidents - Lyndon Johnson, John F. Kennedy, and Richard Nixon. In this essential work of history, David Pietrusza chronicles 1960's struggle for power by bringing to life its towering events and personalities, unlocking its secrets, and turning expert scholarship into rich, human storytelling.

Is there ANY new material in this book at all?
Revisado: 06-20-23
This feels like a book report of several already published books about these events. I don't understand this kind of history book. Working off the backs of other historians to 'write' a 'new' book that's cribbed from pre-existing stuff is lazy, not good history, not good writing and not good work. Statements of a general nature of made and the usual factual examples to back those statement up are missing, aren't here. So those statements are basically opinions, barring anything to support them. Maybe I misunderstand, maybe this is a junior high school text book? Anyway, this writer's no Manchester, Shirer, McCullough. This book LOOKS like a history book but it's something else and I'm not sure what is it exactly.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Very interesting!
Revisado: 06-16-23
Wonderful and interesting book. But the sound edits and changes in narration sessions from what are obviously various dates are just too much, this is not a finished audio book (repeated lines also exist/were left in), This version of this audiobook needs to be scrapped and just re-recorded wholesale (to be clear both the faults and the solutions are on the audiobook producer and not on the narrator who is obviously talented).

Historia
From the Demon Dog of American literature comes James Ellroy’s Hollywood Death Trip. Dig into a quintet of highly stylized true crime that delves into some of the most notorious, unsolved, midcentury-Hollywood murders. Ellroy’s wicked baritone draws listeners into a series of hellacious crimes; beginning with the heartbreaking and gruesome murder of his own mother. Next, it’s the Karen Kupcinet Killing - her body, found strangled just days after JFK’s assassination. Beautiful Stephanie Gorman, a debutante killed by a stranger, made Los Angeles lock its doors at night. The series concludes with the salacious snuff of actor Sal Mineo, whose death is a fitting epigraph for a series set in “Hollyweird”.

Historia
At the end of World War II, the United States was considered the victor over tyranny and a champion of freedom. But it was clear—to some—that the Soviet Union was already seeking to expand and foment revolution around the world, and the American government’s strategy in response relied on the secret efforts of a newly formed CIA. Chronicling their fascinating lives, Scott Anderson follows the exploits of four spies. Despite their ambitions, time and again their efforts went awry, thwarted by ham-fisted politicking and ideological rigidity at the highest levels of the government.

Author/Son of CIA man doesn't fall far from tree?
Revisado: 07-24-22
This is an important book, despite its faults. Had high hopes but potentially involving study of history is repeatedly spoiled by the author's inserting his personal politics and what appear to be strong anti-democratic and pro OSS & CIA feelings (Max Boot was mostly able to steer clear of his own views in his Lansdale book). In this book, however, the world's problems seem to be caused by everyone EXCEPT the CIA--aside from Allen Dulles. Author's father was a CIA employee and so, understandably, maybe he's close to the subject and sometimes seems biased towards the rank and file company folks. Also, the research done seems to consist largely of chunks of other well-known history books. Having read enough in this area I could immediately tag the sources (book & author) of these sections as I read/heard them. That said, this book was an ambitious project and awfully hard to get right. He wrote the book and I didn't. Narrator's basso profundo can be grating but can also have a welcome authority (he seems to be attempting to soften it lately?). Recommended! Read it or listen to it (but, finally, the author might do more research on President Truman in the future, his views here read like a reflex/hand me down from the father).

Using portraits of America’s flawed policy makers and accounts of the forces that drove them, The Best and the Brightest reckons magnificently with the most important abiding question of our country’s recent history: Why did America become mired in Vietnam, and why did we lose? As the definitive single-volume answer to that question, this enthralling book has never been superseded. It is an American classic.

Dancing about architecture?
Revisado: 05-20-22
Overwrought. Doesn't work. Somehow this book manages to take the fun out of something wonderful. This might work better as a reference book kept for specific listening sessions but it's overlapping structure kind of rules that out in terms of usefulness. In shorter New Yorker bites this kind of thing works but this is a tough slog. God bless him for doing this huge project just the same. He got it done. Also, just know that it's concerned strictly with classical music and that general world which is impossible to tell when reading the description, not an accident likely. So... everything else is noise apparently.
