Historia
Vlad Taltos is in love. With a former assassin who may just be better than he is at the Game. Women like this don’t come along every day and no way is he passing up a sure bet. So a wedding is being planned. Along with a shady deal gone wrong and a dead man who owes Vlad money. Setting up the first and trying to deal with the second is bad enough. And then bigger powers decide that Vlad is the perfect patsy to shake the power structure of the kingdom. More's the pity that his soul is sent walkabout to do it.

Great story, mediocre narrator
Revisado: 12-16-24
As usual, Steven Brust does a wonderful job of telling and entertaining story. however, the change in narrator s is definitely a step down. The current narrator is not necessarily bad, but that's about the strongest endorsement I can offer. this is especially jarring to listen to because the previous narrator was exceptional.
For fans of the series, it's still well worth it. however, prepare yourself for a hefty step down in narration quality.

It's no secret that we're pushed to the limit. Today's professionals feel rushed, overwhelmed, and perennially behind. How can we break out of the cycle and create the kind of interesting, meaningful lives that we all seek? Just as CEOs who optimize for quarterly profits often fail to make the strategic investments necessary for long-term growth, the same is true in our own personal and professional lives.

Entertaining, but limited usefulness
Revisado: 11-12-24
This book was interesting and entertaining, but I didn't feel like I got a lot of practical, useful direction from it. Don't get me wrong, there are a few good ideas, and lots of inspiring and interesting stories, but the practical aspect was very much limited towards people who want to follow the author's footsteps as a content creator.
If your goal is to become a blogger, video creator, author, speaker, or similar type thing, then this book is aimed directly at you. For anyone else, you'll likely find more entertainment and possible inspiration than actual useful advice.
On the positive side, the author's background in public speaking shows through in their performance, and they did a proficient job there. For anyone interested in content creation of some sort, this book could be very useful.
Overall, it's a quick read/listen, and there's nothing necessarily bad here; however, it's hard to recommend it over other books covering similar territory that I think are more thorough, useful, and generally better done. As an example, I would recommend something like Atomic Habits by James, Clear to most people before I would recommend this.

There is no one better qualified than Jared Diamond - renowned expert in the fields of physiology and evolutionary biology and award-winning author - to explain the evolutionary forces that operated on our ancestors to make us sexually different. With wit and a wealth of fascinating examples, he explains how our sexuality has been as crucial as our large brains and upright posture in our rise to human status.

Rather interesting, but questionable. . .
Revisado: 06-18-24
This was it challenging book to rate. On the one hand, there is some fascinating material here and much of it feels well researched. However, there are also some significant flaws.
The author has a tendency to put down a great deal of speculation without clearly identifying it as such; instead, it is often presented strongly as if it were proven fact. Additionally, there are a number of sections where the author makes claims that don't seem at all well supported by the rest of the material, suggesting that the author has a shallow understanding of the material or is presenting logical fallacies. I suspect these are places where the author has less actual knowledge or experience with the material. Lastly, the overall organization of the book felt jumbled and haphazard. there were multiple cases where the author meandered into tangents that did not seem well connected to Ricky and he was presenting.
Oh, for those looking at this book based on the title, be aware that the title is more than a little gimmicky and not representative of the book. This is very much a dry scientific look at meeting and sexuality, with a strong emphasis on how human sexuality relates to. whichever random animal happen to catch the author's attention during a particular chapter.
In the end, this isn't a bad book; however, it's not a particularly great one. if the subject matter is of particular interest to you, and you don't mind the previously mentioned criticisms, it may be a good book for you. I haven't read anything else from the author yet, but from what I've heard, the author has other books that are of significantly better quality than this one.

Mostly fun, if very flawed.
Revisado: 05-21-24
If you've played the Assassin's Creed games, this is a moderately fun and entertaining book. However, be aware, this is pretty simplistic and light reading that very closely follows the video game story (for better and worse). There won't be a lot of surprises for fans of the game, and it also makes for some rather frequent segments that are painfully awkward and with mediocre at best dialogue. It also means that there are various random "mission" experiences and other scenes that don't entirely make sense and feel random (at best) or ridiculous (at worst). Even a video game with a good story is still a video game and tying the novel so closely really hamstrings it from being "good".
In the end, it's a rather enjoyable book for fans of the game. However, I couldn't help but feel like there was a real missed opportunity here. With better writing and a little more freedom and flexibility to explore the characters and story, this could have been an amazing novel. Instead, it basically just feels like someone played a video game, took notes, and called the result a book.

Historia
Altaïr embarks on a formidable mission - one that takes him throughout the Holy Land and shows him the true meaning of the Assassin's Creed. To demonstrate his commitment, Altaïr must defeat nine deadly enemies, including Templar leader Robert de Sablé. Here, for the first time, Niccolò Polo, father of Marco, shares Altaïr's remarkable story: his ongoing battle with the Templar conspiracy; a family life that is as tragic as it is shocking; the betrayal of an old friend; and a journey that will ultimately change the course of history.

Good content, not so good narration
Revisado: 05-17-24
Ryan Holiday is an excellent storyteller and a proficient writer. However, he's not a great narrator. The narration comes off as awkward and not particularly pleasant to listen to. Maybe sure to listen the sample before you purchase... you may find that the dead-tree version is a better fit for for you.

Historia
How do some startups go from zero to billions in mere months? How did Alexander the Great, YouTube tycoon Michelle Phan, and Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon climb to the top in less time than it takes most of us to get a promotion? What do high-growth businesses, world-class heart surgeons, and underdog marketers do in common to beat the norm? One way or another, they do it like computer hackers. They employ what psychologists call "lateral thinking: rethinking convention and breaking "rules" that aren't rules.

Entertaining, shallow, simplistic, and fallacious
Revisado: 04-18-24
The author does a good job of telling entertaining stories. Additionally, there are a few useful nuggets of information in here. However, the book operates from a constant stream of examples based on faulty logic, fallacies, selection bias, and shallow advice based on unrealistic expectations.
I came into this book with very high expectations. I come from a tech background, and I appreciate the success stories that have come from that industry. Unfortunately, basing a book on one in a million exceptions does not provide much approaching practical advice for the rest of us. Additionally, the author's understanding of most of the material discussed seems frighteningly superficial. He repeatedly starts with the premise and then provides what he considers to be evidence for it. That doesn't actually logically connect. Lots of correlation, but little to no causation.
On top of that, he has chosen unlikely success stories and then takes all of his lessons from these incredibly successful and lucky people without accounting for selection, bias and how how the attributes were. Practices he calls out are also used by hundreds or thousands of people who don't manage the same level of success.
Ultimately, Reading this book is like a fast food learning experience. It's fast, it's easy, and it tastes good; however, it also has essentially no nutritional value and is just empty calories. Listen to this audiobook if you want to hear entertaining stories, but don't expect to learn anything useful from it.

Good information!
Revisado: 11-20-23
This book contained a lot of great information. This would be very useful for anyone involved in copy editing, of course, but also anyone involved in writing or with an interest in improving their writing. The one major flaw is around names; The section on people's names goes on way, way too long. Honestly, about 98% of that section could have been cut with no meaningful loss of usefulness. My advice: as soon as the names start, skip to the next chapter.
