But tragedy struck, and their love was lost forever.

I couldn't put it down
Revisado: 02-03-23
Not only is this a fantastic story but it is told well in the voices of both the interpreter and the deaf blind man. Within the story, without lecturing, we learn about American Sign Language, we learn about issues facing the deaf/blind community, we are confirmed in our expectations about how out of touch and unloving religious fanatics actually are. I wish Arlo and Cyril all the best going forward.

Historia
Jade believes she must get out of her neighborhood if she's ever going to succeed. Her mother says she has to take every opportunity. She has. She accepted a scholarship to a mostly-white private school and even Saturday morning test prep opportunities. But some opportunities feel more demeaning than helpful. Like an invitation to join Women to Women, a mentorship program for "at-risk" girls. Except really, it's for black girls. From "bad" neighborhoods. But maybe there are some things Jade could show these successful women about the real world and finding ways to make a real difference.

Has no heft
Revisado: 01-15-20
I chose this book because of how much I enjoyed Moore's novel Heft. This doesn't compare. It rambled. It explained things in detail that it had mentioned in detail 3 hours earlier. Sure it had plot twists but nothing extraordinary. She is playing in the space of police procedurals which so many other people do better. Perhaps a different backdrop for her character study would have suited her better.
Her sense of place and architecture is strong.

Not just a romance novel
Revisado: 11-18-19
Yes, there is some bodice ripping passion and at first I thought I was going to be disappointed by this book. But within an hour, I was hooked. The twists and turns are well plotted and the bodice ripping, it turns out, had its reasons. A good first book establishing the characters of the series. I'll certainly listen to the next one to hear how they all get on.

Historia
After everything that the citizens of Beartown have gone through, they are struck yet another blow when they learn that their beloved local hockey team will soon be disbanded. What makes it worse is the obvious satisfaction that all the former Beartown players, who now play for a rival team in Hed, take in that fact. Amidst the mounting tension between the two rivals, a surprising newcomer is handpicked to be Beartown's new hockey coach. Soon a new team starts to take shape around Amat, the fastest player you'll ever see; Benji, the crazed lone wolf; and Vidar, a born-to-be-bad troublemaker.

No Driving While Weeping!
Revisado: 07-11-18
Once again a beautiful book full of well developed characters, plausible events, hard truths and some hold-my-breath-listen-in-the-garage moments of needing to know the outcome before being able to turn off the car and go inside. I wept with both joy and heartbreak. Fortunately I listened to the last hour while cleaning house; it was safer than doing so while driving.
Do read Beartown first.

When will it end
Revisado: 06-24-18
There were way too many plot twists. It went on way too long. I could have quit but I did want to know whodunnit - if it had been a book, I might have actually flipped to the end. The narrator sometimes sounded as though he were giving a lecture on points of law or some such - perhaps that is also the author's fault.

Historia
Beginning with a sweetly funny, moving account of her arranged marriage, the author undercuts stereotypes and offers the refreshing view of an American life through Muslim eyes. In chapters leavened with humor, hope, and insight, she recounts an immigrant's daily struggles balancing assimilation with preserving heritage, overcoming religious barriers from within and distortions of Islam from without, and confronting issues of raising her children as Muslims - while they lobby for a Christmas tree!

Revisado: 11-02-17
This is an important, well written story about Islam in America today told from the vantage point of a woman who has lived - and effected - the changes and reforms that are bringing Islam into modernity. Her personal stories will resonate with anyone living as a minority especially but not only mothers and women.

Breathless and cliched
Revisado: 05-01-17
Would you try another book from T E Kinsey and/or Elizabeth Knowelden?
No thank you
Has A Quiet Life in the Country turned you off from other books in this genre?
nope
What didn’t you like about Elizabeth Knowelden’s performance?
too breathless and the characters were almost indistinguishable - It was especially hard to tell when the speaker changed from a woman to a man.
Was A Quiet Life in the Country worth the listening time?
It was a light weight road companion
Any additional comments?
It wasn't so very awful that I didn't finish it but I don't expect to continue with the series.
