Historia
From his rare vantage point as Lewis's student, friend, and professional colleague, Professor John Lawlor recalls Lewis "in his habit as he lived." He offers an unforgettable account of studying under Lewis and an enchanting depiction of undergraduate life at Oxford between the wars. To round out his picture, Professor Lawlor draws on the recollections of other associates of Lewis, including a close comparison with J.R.R. Tolkien.

C.S. Lewis: Memories and Reflections
Revisado: 04-21-05
My expectations of this book were high, but they were certainly not met. I was hoping for kind of a "innner circle view" of C.S. Lewis from one of his students and friends. What this book is is some very long drawn out reflections that focus primarily on Lewis' literary work and the author's critique and categorization of those works.
Also the narration was a bit too monotone and droll for me. I did listen to the whole thing but found myself having to listen in 10 to 15 minute pieces to keep from getting bored.
If you're looking for a critique of some of Lewis' work, this might be OK for you. If your looking for something that gives a bit more of an insider's biography, I would stay away from this.

Historia
Dr. Bruce Wilkinson, president of Walk Thru the Bible Ministries, takes readers to 1 Chronicles 4:10 to discover how they can release God's miraculous power and experience the blessings God longs to give each of us. The life of Jabez, one of the Bible's most overlooked heroes of the faith, bursts from unbroken pages of genealogies in an audacious, four-part prayer that brings him an extraordinary measure of divine favor, anointing, and protection.

God does not exist to simply do our bidding
Revisado: 07-29-04
Let me start out by saying that there were parts of the book I liked, but I believe that this book, and many prayer books like it, misunderstand and misappropriate what true prayer is. In "Jabez", the author's prayers are always answered in the way and timing he dictates as if God is a divine "bell-hop" waiting in heaven to do his bidding. Perhaps God, in his infinite wisdom, does not want my "territory" expanded. Often we pray for things that we want God to do for us (or others) that looks good, but simply are not in God's plan for us. We must pray in His will and recognize that as finite humans sometimes our view of things is simply to small or flawed. As Ruth Graham put it, "If God would have answered every prayer I prayed in faith, I would have been married 7 times before I met Billy". Sometimes what looks good to us is not in God's will, and I believe "Jabez" misses that crucial point.
The book also puts too much emphasis on the "petition" aspect of prayer with little or no regard for praising, thanking, and confessing to God in prayer. Ultimately prayer, in this book, is reduced to dictating to God our "shopping list" instead of the communion with the Father that Jesus illustrated prayer to be. Prayer should change us to be in line with what God would have us do, not try to manipulate God toward our point of view.
