the dark heart of a small town summer
Revisado: 08-03-23
I'm always asking for "Calgon-take-me-away" type of stories, and this one filled the bill perfectly. I wasn't listening at work, I was a kid enjoying summer again. Fairs, sports, the Dairy Queen, the river. So vivid I could smell it.
All the characters I grew up around were there, and fully fleshed out, from the town gossip to larger-than-life Lion Jack.
Did he do it? I'm not going to say. You'll have to find out by peeling back the layers of this incredible story with an awesome narrator, who has perfect pacing and intonation. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Historia
Lily is a mother, daughter, and second wife. And a writer, maybe? Or she was going to be, before she had kids. Now, in her rented Brooklyn apartment she’s grappling with her sexual and intellectual desires in 2016. Vivian Barr seems to be the perfect political wife, dedicated to helping her charismatic and ambitious husband find success in Watergate-era Washington DC. But one night he demands a humiliating favor, and her refusal changes the course of her life. Esther is a fiercely independent young woman in ancient Persia, where she and her uncle’s tribe live a tenuous existence.

Annoying.

The narrator of Lily's story sounds like she's taking a hit off of an oxygen tank between each sentence. I should have gotten the print version, it's a good story but that really killed it for me.
