Masterful
Revisado: 01-20-22
All the stars must have aligned to create this production. It has a wonderful story, a talented narrator, and evocative background music that is always at the right audio level; this is the highest standard for an audiobook.
This is book 2 of the Mystwick series, so you definitely want to check out the first one. Khoury has already set up so much from the previous installment, yet still quickly sets up four (if not more) points of conflict right in the beginning of the book. Her pacing is impeccable. She never once forgets any of her narrative threads, and weaves them together perfectly. Every chapter took me exactly where I wanted to go in the story, and I didn't even know it.
The author gives enough clues so that you can guess some of the mysteries, but she still got me with some of her twists (which were of course perfectly set up beforehand.) As a reader, I felt like I was in good hands. What an excellent book. Can't wait for the next one.

Historia
The simple truth is proven that sometimes a gentleman never knows his heart until a lady comes along to introduce it to him. When Mr. Darcy encounters Elizabeth Bennet injured after a fall, his concern for her welfare cracks the shell of his carefully guarded heart, and a charming man emerges. Elizabeth sees an appealing side of him she never believed possible from the stoic, proud master of Pemberley.

to be avoided
Revisado: 05-07-21
-Blatantly plagiarizes several movies (especially the Keira Knightley version) without any seeming remorse or attempt at originality. It made me uncomfortable to have supported a book so heavily plagiarized from another script.
-Every character is a professor X mutant who can read everyone's minds and emotions. Example: Darcy helps Lizzy off a horse right in the beginning and her father apparently notices her holding her breath in that moment. (What?) And then deduces that she loves Darcy. Every character operates like some magical empath.
-Mr. Bennet is a Disney dad who hasn't spent one single minute of his life in the Regency. What he does to his daughter Mary was abominable, nonsensical, and entirely illogical given the time period.
-I really wasn't feeling the casual fatphobia of this book.
-Repetitive vocab (The word "blush" was used 3 times in one paragraph.)
-Reads like a soap opera. Wickham is ridiculous as the scheming mustache-twirling villain.
Random scene I hated: Darcy staying at Bingley's house, emptying his glass, and tossing the glass into the fire for no good reason. As if Darcy would just casually destroy someone else's property, and have no concern for the service staff, who have to pick glass shards out of the fireplace in the morning.
I did not like the narration. It was very over the top. The sing-song cadence makes one rather seasick.

Sadly did not hold my interest
Revisado: 12-20-20
Oh dear, I have finally found it. A du Maurier that I didn't like. Truly boring. None of the actions by the characters were justified by any good motivations. We have a really bad scientist, a man who hates his wife (though who can tell why) and a few trips into a lackluster past. I can see this book be a hit at a time when scifi is getting big and Jungian philosophy is catching on. By modern standards this is not a good book. I have read other reviews mention a surprise ending. Not sure what that could have been. It was a flat ending for a flat book for me. Certainly no twists that compare to du Maurier's other novels.
The narrator did not do any accents but his native one. Very frustrating since many of the characters were American, and I wished they would have cast someone who could do a range of accents, from American to London to Cornish. Other than that he was a capable actor, and his tone and cadence were very good.

Audio level issues
Revisado: 11-15-20
Sadly this audiobook suffers from a few audio issues. There are multiple strange pauses, and for the first half the audio levels are all over the place. The narrator begins each sentence in a much louder tone, and ends almost in a whisper. It was frustrating to listen to. Luckily this seemed to have been mended halfway through, but the beginning is rough.
Another beautiful Montgomery story. I am knocking off one star for all the religion. Haha. Sorry. I read many classics, so I'm used to Christianity playing a larger part in the lives of the characters, but at times religion seemed to take over this particular book. It was a lot. Other than that it's just a string of charming scenes of kids enjoying their lives. Very cozy and sweet.

Funny, charming, sublime
Revisado: 11-07-20
I now see why many call this Gaskell's best work. What a masterpiece. Just a warning here of the incredibly offensive racism and colonialism at about 4 or 5 parts in this book.
The performance was first class. So many different voices and accents. Such a privilege to have such a skilled narrator for an equally excellent book. Wonderful job all around.

Historia
In 10 lectures, award-winning historian Patrick N. Allitt transports listeners to England in the 1840s and 1850s. During those two decades, Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, became one of the most influential people in the country and remains a figure of fascination even today. In fact, the British royal family as we know it wouldn't exist without the private and public actions of this detached, impartial, and upright political figure.

Just wonderful
Revisado: 05-17-20
Albert was already one of my favourite royals, but this program enriched my understanding of him immensely. I completely devoured this audiobook. As mentioned by the narrator, there are countless film version of Prince Albert, yet why spend time on those when the reality is so much more exciting. The structure of this production will tell you of his relationship to his family, but also put his political actions into context, and explain their global repercussions.

Love this narrator
Revisado: 05-05-20
I knew this narrator from Northanger Abbey, and loved her then. Her name is Elizabeth Klett, but for some reason audible lists her under this different name as well. I was a little saddened by this production only having one capslocked rant of a review. I adore this narrator's voices and accents, and hope listeners will give her a try. A wonderful classic, skillfully read.

This was one of the best narrations I have listened to. Excellent timing and acting.
I don't know how Talia Hibbert manages to be so funny all the time. It's just zinger after zinger. Such fun, clear character writing, and the tension between the leads is just delicious.
