great but...
Revisado: 01-04-22
I loved the book. Would have 5 stars but for exceptionally unbelievable areas. I do give room for artistic license, etc, but segments of this novel are over the top eye-rollers.

stale & predictable
Revisado: 11-20-21
The book was decent. I have to say it totally lost any credibility or traction when they hit the number dilemma. numerologist, seriously?! A few other worn out themes pulled out & dusted off for this all too predictabl, unimpressive story.

I just can't do it.
Revisado: 09-03-21
If I don't like a book at first I give it a few chapters. This book has proven that to be a bad habit. Chapter 4 & I just can't take it any more. Grow up for heaven's sake. Characters, dialog, mood & narrator are about 2nd grade level, but the story is far from being interesting or fast enough to keep their attention. This book has no audience. Not losing another minute on it.

Revisado: 08-13-21
I love this series and the characters. I have a huge crush on Jimmy. I've downloaded every volume available. Unusual for me, but the crime fiction has actually become secondary.

Meet Dexter Morgan, a polite wolf in sheep’s clothing. He’s handsome and charming, but something in his past has made him abide by a different set of rules. He’s a serial killer whose one golden rule makes him immensely likable: he only kills bad people.

too long repetitious predictable
Revisado: 06-21-21
The writing is fabulous but the story is not unique & it drags out wayyyy to long. The story lends itself to such a predictable end, that you bear the redundancy in anticipation of an unforeseen twist. Most unfortunately, no surprises.

Exceptionally good story. narrator not so much.
Revisado: 06-07-21
DO get over the narrator; the book is fabulous! I almost canned this within the first 15 minutes because the narrator's overdramatized upswing at the end of each sentence wore on me, escalating it from distracting to annoying. It actually abates somewhat as the story unfolds with only intermittent gross exaggerations. Trust me, the story is SO worth it!!!!

Historia
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

Historia
Fadeout is the first of Joseph Hansen’s twelve classic mysteries featuring rugged Dave Brandstetter, an insurance investigator who is contentedly gay. When entertainer Fox Olson’s car plunges off a bridge in a storm, a death claim is filed, but where is Olson’s body? As Brandstetter questions family, fans, and detractors, he grows certain Olson is still alive and must find him before the would-be killer does. Suspenseful and wry, shrewd and deeply felt, Fadeout remains as fresh today as when it startled readers more than thirty years ago.

OMG. I can't take it.
Revisado: 04-23-21
Even if I don't really like a book, I'm usually invested enough to listen until the end - if only out of curiosity about the outcome or to see if it will get any better. I'm on Chapter 18 of, what? 22? And I just don't care anymore. I can't take it. Slow & boring. Even the characters.

Holding back 2 stars
Revisado: 04-02-21
I enjoyed this book, the characters, and the story enough to give it 5 stars. I subtracted 2 stars from the story for a habit the author has that seriously interferes with my ability to enjoy it. An inexcusable percentage of the word count is attributable to frequent & consistent use as "Christ" or "Jesus" as the very nearly exclusive expletive for all possible circumstances. There are so many other possibilities! I'm not even sensitive to four-letter words, but using His name is like a sharp slap in the face. And honestly, it's excessive. How often should I 'turn the other cheek?' In MY book, it's indefensible.

Historia
Meet Rook. A middle-aged philosophy professor with a sarcastic sense of humour, an ongoing rivalry with his highly-strung colleague Jeremy, and a rocky relationship with his ex-wife. But he has far more pressing matters to attend to than domestic disputes and academic feuds. He moonlights as a private investigator. Armed with a quick, inquisitive mind, an arsenal of philosophic quotations and an addiction to fear, he is willing to embroil himself in any sticky situation which comes his way.

LOVE this character!
Revisado: 03-28-21
I just love this irreverent self (& everyone else)-deprecating character. His is a unique find for me. That combo, in play with his intelligence & dry wit, is the stuff that makes one spray whatever they're sipping without notice. He's one who can blatantly insult another in fine detail & leave them wondering what he just said & how they should take it... if it doesn't go completely over their head. Add the dichotomy of the coward thrilled by danger and interactions with those at their wit's end with his aloof impertinence.... What an incredible find for me!
