Historia
Hetty Heinrich is a young girl growing up under Nazi rule. With an SS Officer father, a brother in the Luftwaffe and a member of the BDM, Hetty is the epitome of a perfect German child. But Walter changes everything. Blond-haired, blue-eyed, perfect-in-every-way Walter. The boy who saved her life. A Jew. As she falls more and more in love with a man who is against all she has been taught, Hetty begins to question everything. Will the steady march of dark forces destroy their world, or can love ultimately triumph?

People Like Us
Revisado: 04-01-25
It read like a YA book rather than adult literature. Even though it was written from the German perspective, which was the drawcard for me, I thought it followed the same trope, and while I finished the book, I’d score it a 6.5 0r 7/10 because I found the characters sometimes irksome and less than believable in their responses. It was all too predictable. A minor quibble is that the reader pronounces ‘says’ like ‘days’, which I know is dialectal but I did find myself distracted and focusing on it. People raved about this book on my book site, so perhaps I am just jaded.

Historia
There Are Rivers in the Sky is a rich, sweeping novel set between the 19th century and modern times, about love and loss, memory and erasure, hurt and healing, centred around three enchanting characters living on the banks of the River Thames and the River Tigris – their lives all curiously touched by the epic of Gilgamesh.

There Are Rivers in the Sky
Revisado: 12-29-24
There is poetry in her prose. Elif Shafak weaves a sublimely written narrative which casts a spell. I am envious of her intuitive story-teller instincts and her ability to paint a picture with words that linger in the mind and on the tongue, long after the story has ended. It was my first Shafak novel so I am so happy to be able to feast on more.
The magic of water, and words, and the ways of humanity combine to make this story memorable, substantial and extraordinary. Just a glorious read.

Gentle Comfort
Revisado: 10-12-24
The slow, seemingly predictable journey of relationships. At times I became irritated with the story’s failure to move on but I guess that was the point. The beauty of it for me lay in Meryl Streep’s performance, which was sublime.

The Women
Revisado: 09-24-24
Because I am currently working in Vietnam, I thoroughly enjoyed the historic background of the novel. The pace of the story was good and kept me listening from the moment I began it. There was a moment where Frankie thoroughly irritated me, as her continued poor choices did not gel with who she was laid out to be at her core. I did not mind her human weaknesses. But her self-indulgence was what irked. She seemed to lack the strength of character to get the help she needed despite realising this on more than one occasion. Nonetheless a very good listen. I did enjoy the narration.

Lyrical language and a brilliant telling kept me engrossed till the end. Organised religion’s penchant for damning and accusing people of witchcraft and sorcery has always fascinated. Kiran Millwood Hargrave weaves a spell of her own, her language superlative, her characters strongly defined. Highly recommend.

You can be a non-gamer to find this interesting.
Revisado: 07-02-23
Perhaps because I listened to thins over an interrupted period of time it began to peter out for me. Sadie and Sam’s periods of ‘no-speaks’ seemed a little puerile as they got older. I enjoyed the premise of the story, which I found original, even though I know nothing about gaming. I enjoyed the book overall, though the robotic reading distracted in the beginning. I came to associate it with the techie world the characters inhabited and it seemed to suit the story after all.

England 1835. Eliza Acton is a poet who dreams of seeing her words in print. But when she takes her new manuscript to a publisher, she’s told that ‘poetry is not the business of a lady’. Instead, they want her to write a cookery book. That’s what readers really want from women. England is awash with exciting new ingredients, from spices to exotic fruits. But no one knows how to use them. Eliza leaves the offices appalled. But when her father is forced to flee the country for bankruptcy, she has no choice but to consider the proposal.

Historia
At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and her husband, Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse.

Slow Burn
Revisado: 05-12-23
Vignettes of the lives of inhabitants in a small town in America. The realities and complexities of life that impact on our shared human experiences. It took me a couple of chapters to settle but once I did, I loved Olive Strout and will look for more by the same author. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because it did not ‘hook’ me as quickly as the previous book I’d listened to.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing. But it's the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute take a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant Nobel-prize-nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.
