Historia
With its ensemble of warm and unforgettable characters, The Faculty Lounge shows listeners a different side of school life. It all starts when an elderly substitute teacher at Baldwin High School is found dead in the faculty lounge. After a bit of a stir, life quickly returns to normal. But when, a week later, the spontaneous scattering of his ashes on the school grounds catches the attention of some busybody parents, it sets in motion a year that can only be described as wild, bizarre, tragic, mundane, beautiful, and humorous all at once.

I loved the characters, and, as a teacher, I loved reading a novel where I actually felt seen! More, please!

Historia
In A Collective Bargain, longtime labor organizer, environmental activist, and political campaigner Jane McAlevey makes the case that unions are a key institution capable of taking effective action against today’s super-rich corporate class. Since the 1930s, when unions flourished under New Deal protections, corporations have waged a stealthy and ruthless war against the labor movement. And they’ve been winning.

Beautiful and I’m sobbing
Revisado: 04-03-24
Wow. This is not just a work of art but also a work that required some serious therapy and working through trauma to produce. Absolutely beautiful. I hope he is reunited with his pretend family. I hope that they read the tribute he wrote to them.

Historia
Imagine if you made one little mistake when you were young and were punished for it for the rest of your life. Well, that’s what happened to Lydia (yes, that Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister from Pride and Prejudice), and she’s here to set the record straight. Hold on to your teacups and get ready for sophisticated (and a little bit naughty) hot takes and witty banter that’ll make you laugh—and think. We meet Lydia just as she is denounced by her family, exiled miles from home, and married to the rogue George Wickham, who seems to love all women...except his own wife.

Historia
In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place. Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Gross - doesn’t hold up
Revisado: 11-07-21
Eeew. I remember watching the movie back in the ‘80’s with my dad and thinking it was really cool. But listening to it now, I see it was definitely written back in the 1960’s and was very much of its time.
The author makes his bad guy (the Baron) fat, and spends hundreds of words describing his fat, using his fatness as evidence of his evil. That fat phobia doesn’t sit well with me.
Then, he also uses homophobia to show the evil of the same character. The Baron rapes young men and has a crush on his own nephew and on Paul. The only reason his character harbors same sex desires is to make him look like a bad person. Keep your homophobia back in 1965, please.
Finally, though the Lady Jessica is a developed character, her real purpose is to gape at how amazing Paul is. And Chaney is just an awestruck cheerleader for Paul. I’m sure in 1965, having female characters with “power” was very forward thinking, but, like I said, it doesn’t hold up.
I don’t know how they are remaking this as a movie nowadays. I hope they do something to bring it into modern times because, eeew.

Historia
A man seeks to prove himself as a hero. A monster seeks silence in his territory. A warrior seeks to avenge her murdered son. A dragon ends it all. The familiar elements of the epic poem are seen with a novelist’s eye toward gender, genre, and history - Beowulf has always been a tale of entitlement and encroachment, powerful men seeking to become more powerful, and one woman seeking justice for her child, but this version brings new context to an old story.
