Historia
In this deeply scary and intensely unnerving debut novel, Jake and a woman known only as "The Girlfriend" are on a drive to visit his parents at their secluded farm. But when Jake leaves "The Girlfriend" stranded at an abandoned high school, what follows is a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease, an exploration into psychological frailty, and an ending as suspenseful as The Usual Suspects and as haunting as Misery.

I don’t get it. Waste of time.
Revisado: 01-02-25
I love a good twist and that’s what I was waiting for the whole time I had to endure the narrator going on and on. And then the end simply didn’t make sense to me. I shouldn’t have bothered to finish it.

I do not read historical fiction but this was recommended to me and within a couple chapters I was hooked. I cried so many times! I was truly moved.

Preview to make sure you don’t mind the narrator

I did not like the main narrator. Characters were underdeveloped and so I didn’t believe in them, I was annoyed by their choices. I would not recommend.

The characters, the build up, I was so invested! The steady narration, the calming matter of fact voice, really pulled me in. Like an old man telling a story yet it’s not… I couldn’t pull away. Loved it!

Historia
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Had me pulled in till the end. I was invested in the characters. The end was a little anticlimactic like a movie that ends more open than you’d like but that’s nothing new!

Pulled me in to their world
Revisado: 10-28-22
Such a great book! And my 4th listen from this author. Her character development is incredible, the psychology alone is astonishing. I feel like I KNOW these people and it’s emotional when you finish, like leaving a whole world you’ve been in, and you’re kind of sad when it’s over. Highly recommend.

Excited for the next book!!!
Revisado: 09-10-22
This was a shorter one than I remember from the last 7, but I binged those and waited patiently months for this one. It was worth it, though a cliff hanger for sure as it didn’t delve much into the family stuff until the end and leaves you waiting for more! The other books spent a lot more time building the narrative around Blake’s family that wasn’t touched on nearly as much this time around. But I’ll keep listening for sure!

Keeps you engaged, not a fan of narrator
Revisado: 01-20-22
I started this because I love crime thrillers and I wanted a series to keep me occupied a while! It’s an engaging story and keeps you hooked for more details in the next story. The climax was a little abrupt on this one, but I liked it overall.
I am not a fan of the narrator or how she makes Astra’s voice inflections. It’s cringey. And I’m supposed to like her character… other than that I recommend this title and series so far.
