Good - if you can accept the elements of a Southern Christian worldview
Revisado: 04-18-25
I hadn’t vetted this title carefully so found myself surprised when the characters suddenly prayed for e.g. discernment or courage. I’ve never seen that in a book before, but found it interesting.
The American South is a very different world from mine and I stayed with it even through the cringe-inducing naïveté of the main characters.
The rescue of the victims of people-smuggling was gripping, as were the complex family dynamics. Even adult children said ‘yes sir’ and ‘yes ma’am’ to their parents - I have no idea if that detail was realistic or not.
It was a fascinating glimpse into a parallel existence but I wouldn’t read another of the same genre. The narration was excellent.

Historia
Upon retirement at the age of sixty-two, and grieving his deceased wife, renowned journalist Bernard Ollivier felt a sense of profound emptiness: What do I do now? While some see retirement as a chance to cash in their chips and settle into a comfy armchair, Ollivier still longed for more. Searching for inspiration, he strapped on his gear, donned his hat, and headed out the front door to hike the Way of St. James, a 1400-mile journey from Paris to Compostela, Spain.

Beauty and awful filth in equal parts
Revisado: 03-11-25
What contrasts await visitors to Turkey - the warmth and welcome by so many offset by the rapaciousness of as many others. The wretched squalor and neglect in the hotels all along the way. The ignorance of ordinary people of their own history- knowing little or nothing about the Silk Road, and caring less. The medieval oppression of rural women. This record is a staggering panorama of a very foreign country.
Our guide is a somewhat dull fellow, with few surprising or delightful insights or comments as one would hope for from a travel companion. But he is acceptable, a mundane predictable presence. His many unwise choices about packing, gear needed, clothing, language ability, and judgement of character of those met along the way make one wonder how he lived through his truncated trip. But survive he did, as there are two further books about it; I will not be listening to those. The author is simply not interesting enough to spend any more time with.

Such interesting insights into the actors, auditions, director’s approach, studio’s struggles to control, the depth of its effect on American pop culture, how it’s still so gripping over 50 years later. Just excellent, informative and fun to hear.

Insight into a world unto itself
Revisado: 08-22-24
I learned so much about maritime rescue, meteorology, marine biology, and the fishing industry - all topics new to me. All of this in a human scale setting about the individuals aboard one specific fishing vessel that was lost at sea during a severe storm. It was very moving and gripping. I want to seek out the author’s other books now. Highly recommended - and the narrator was great!

This was a fun and funny listen
Revisado: 07-25-24
This is not my usual genre, to say the least, but I tried it on a lark and was instantly charmed. The premise is delightfully original and the banter between all the characters clever.
The Pacific Northwest setting was appealing and small town social life lovingly skewered. She captured personalities brilliantly. The few brief, graphic sex scenes were interesting because I couldn’t help but wonder if any woman, ever, anywhere, has ever actually experienced coitus that way. I hope so! (But have my doubts…) Fun listen, anyway! The narrator was wonderful!

Historia
Harney County, Oregon, 1968: Nick Drake has a chest full of medals and enough demons to fill a duffel bag. He's been trained to kill but was never retrained to rejoin society. Drake flees to the lonesome high desert in search of redemption and takes a job patrolling wildlife refuges where the only conflicts are keeping out stray cows and ticketing poachers. But then he stumbles across a girl's body ritually placed in a gully. Her murder is only the beginning, and Drake must face humanity's heart of darkness once again if he's to stop a killer from turning even more gullies into graves.

Wow, what a find!
Revisado: 07-01-24
This soulful, deep, honourable protagonist is worth knowing and spending time with. His respect and openness to other people’s ways of seeing, seeking, and knowing are key to his ability to act quickly to save lives.
This is the most compelling book I’ve read in ages, but I admit it is partly due to the fact that it mirrored so much of my own story as a teenage girl in 1968 frequently hitchhiking through Oregon on my way to and from San Francisco & Seattle. I too had close calls with predators, stayed at an ashram, knew the same movies, books and song lyrics as Nick Drake, and had male friends wounded spiritually by their experience in Vietnam.
The story would be exciting to those readers who do not share the era, though, as it is so gripping and well written. I intend to read more of this author.

Wonderful narrator & story
Revisado: 12-07-23
As an American living in Australia I loved hearing a story about an American woman and her daughters travelling in Australia and the puzzling tragedy that befell them. The relationships are handled so delicately and the complicated mystery unfolded so masterfully, shifting characters’ point of view and two different time periods in a clear and understandable way. I loved everything about this book.

Lovely narration of fascinating story
Revisado: 11-13-23
The bright 12 year old Jewish girl in 1941 small-town Northeast Arkansas relates her wartime experience when German prisoners of war are based there to carry out agricultural labour in place of the local young men off fighting the war in Europe. The social dynamics of her school and the town are captured vividly, as are her dysfunctional family relationships. A very engaging and poignant story that I dearly loved and highly recommend. The narration is perfect.
By 1943 over 23,000 German and Italian POWs had been sent to the USA, a part of history I had never heard before and am now looking into. Some variation of this story could very well have happened!
