Historia
Mary McAuliffe's Dawn of the Belle Epoque took the listener from the multiple disasters of 1870-1871 through the extraordinary re-emergence of Paris as the cultural center of the Western world. Now, in Twilight of the Belle Epoque, McAuliffe portrays Paris in full flower at the turn of the 20th century, where creative dynamos such as Picasso, Matisse, Stravinsky, Debussy, Ravel, Proust, Marie Curie, Gertrude Stein, Jean Cocteau, and Isadora Duncan set their respective circles on fire with a barrage of revolutionary visions and discoveries.

Very disjointed storytelling but great historically.
Revisado: 02-10-25
I thought the storytelling was very disjointed so it was difficult to recall who was who when time periods and events changed. A great story of the time and culture but hard to keep up and understand the narrative of each “character’s” life and career progression.

Historia
In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and - despite her prosthetic leg - helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it.

Incredible, untold story of a woman determined to make her path in the world. Why weren’t we ever taught about her in school?

Quite a bit of Tom foolery and smut
Revisado: 01-23-25
Long and drawn out. A lot of “word salad” as I like to call the ramblings. Lots of foul language and smut, surprising for the time period in which it was written.

Historia
London. A city drowning in fog. Amid that fog, a man with no name dies above a strange junkshop. Threads of mist and intrigue weave around a court case with no resolution, linking great country houses with the lowest slum in the city, mingling the high-born with a boy who sweeps the filthy streets, enshrouding devious plots and sudden murder, bringing together two extraordinary women – Lady Dedlock and Esther Summerson - who seem to have nothing whatsoever in common but who will find themselves inextricably linked.

Fine until the R-rated bedroom scenes
Revisado: 01-10-25
It was going well for an abridged version of the story but the 2 R-rated bedroom scenes were not necessary. Gross. Dickens would be ashamed.

Revisado: 11-09-24
Long, yes, but each book got better and better. Not for the faint of heart as there is adult content and strife but the journey of Kristin’s life can resonate with us all.

Different than other Cooper books
Revisado: 07-03-24
While the author admits that most of the story is fictionalized, it really wasn’t necessary to build an abusive husband into it (physical, emotional, and sexual). *content warning, some graphic, for sensitive individuals* The format of this novel was very different than Tea Cooper’s earlier works and that was a shame. This isn’t one to listen to with children around.
