I tried
Revisado: 04-27-25
The dialogue is so bad, even Angus King can't save it. Nothing feels authentic about it. Too many cliches, and too many caricatures. It is a super short book, so I was going to force my way to the finish, when I remembered I actually paid for the book instead of using a credit. I love Angus King so much I thought I could listen to him read the dictionary, but it turns out I can't. AND it turns out I can't return something I paid cash for, so now I hate it even more!!!

I was worried about this one…
Revisado: 04-18-25
I have loved everything JD Kirk has written! I have read all his titles multiple times. The first few chapters of this book had me worried. His writing style is the same. It is engaging from the first sentence. But I was worried about the direction the story was headed. I shouldn’t have been. I didn’t anticipate the ending and the story was just as good as any of his previous books. My only complaint is that JD Kirk writes so fast if I’m not paying attention for a month or two he has 2-3 new books out. So I’m on to the next one.

As good as previous books
Revisado: 04-18-25
I've read some of the other reviews complaining that this was the weakest of the King's Dark Tidings books. I disagree. This book has the same strengths and weaknesses of the previous. Reskin is dark and brooding, and he always manages to miraculously find a solution. They wouldn't have made it to the 6th book if that bothered any readers. The series isn't over, so the ultimate battle is still in the future, but the conflict in this volume is resolved, leaving storylines to be dealt with in future books. My only complaint is the same one I've had all along. Why does Kel Kade write such irritating female characters? I don't think it is just how Nick Podehl's voice for them all sounds like whiny five-year-olds. Surely the writer knows women who don't act spoiled and whiny! Since I've made it the book 6 with many re-readings in between, I obviously enjoy her writing enough to overlook that flaw. I did enjoy the addition to Cena (not sure the spelling, since I'm listening to the book). Let's hope that she stays fun and doesn't get turned into a spoiled and whiny dragon.

Historia
After a meteoric rise, China today is one of the world’s most powerful nations. Just a century ago, it was a crumbling empire with literacy reserved for the elite few, as the world underwent a massive technological transformation that threatened to leave them behind. In Kingdom of Characters, Jing Tsu argues that China’s most daunting challenge was a linguistic one: the century-long fight to make the formidable Chinese language accessible to the modern world of global trade and digital technology.

Very interesting history
Revisado: 02-19-25
I am surprised at how much I enjoyed hearing the history of the Chinese language. It is a dry history. The author has made it a story that connects the survival of China with the survival of its unique written language. I got this book because I am learning Mandarin and I thought it might help me learn it. I’m not sore or accomplished that, but I did gain an appreciation for the language and the history.

Historia
For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviors you see at a dog park. We have a good understanding of what it means when dogs wag their tails, but what about when they sniff and roll on a stinky spot? What goes on in dogs' heads and hearts-and how much can we know and understand? Canine Confidential has the answers. Written by Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of dog behavior, but also helps us understand how we can make our dogs' lives the best they can possibly be.

Great book
Revisado: 12-04-24
I love how informative this book is. The author is even discussed the D word. That would be dominance. Too many dog people deny it. If they had any of my pet terriers they wouldn’t. My only complaint is the narrators voice.

Not about dogs
Revisado: 11-04-24
From the description of this book, you would think that it is about the history of humans and canines. It does mention the history of canines, but only as it also presents the history of everything else. I am not bothered that it is more of an academic treatise, but the focus is wrong. I did not need to hear about the entire history of Australia! The book would have been a tenth of its length if it cut out everything that wasn't needed to understand the interactions of humans and canines.

Very thorough
Revisado: 11-03-24
I am glad I didn't look to see what else the author had written, I might have skipped this book if I had. Jennifer S. Holland does such a great job covering this subject. I have read a lot of books on dog training and dog psychology recently, and none of them have covered the topic so broadly. I will be listening to it again just to catch what I might have missed.

Her great-grandmother donated land for one of The Family’s first communes in Texas. Her mother, at thirteen, was forced to marry the leader and served as his secretary for many years. Beholden to The Family’s strict rules, Daniella suffers physical, emotional, and sexual abuse—masked as godly discipline and divine love—and is forbidden from getting a traditional education.

Five figures gather 'round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult-sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken, but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood. Years later a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders that shock the Black Country.

I really enjoyed this book
Revisado: 07-15-24
I always read reviews before I buy an audiobook, so I knew that many reviewers said the narrator read too fast. I did not feel like that at all. I thought her pace was good, and I did not think she delivered in a monotone voice. I think she did a great job as a narrator.
I enjoyed the story. The only thing I didn't like was that she described the murders from the point of view of the murderer. It was a little too gruesome for light entertainment. I skipped ahead to the last one. I had already guessed the twist at the end, but I still enjoyed how it played out. I plan on getting book 2 immediately.
