Historia
Until recently, microglia were thought to be merely the brain’s housekeepers, helpfully removing damaged cells. But a recent groundbreaking discovery revealed them to be capable of terrifying Jekyll and Hyde behavior. When triggered - and anything that stirs up the immune system in the body can activate microglia - they can morph into destroyers, impacting a wide range of issues from memory problems and anxiety to depression and Alzheimer’s. Under the right circumstances, however, microglia can be coaxed back into being angelic healers.

I don’t know how she pulled it off, but the narrator’s voice sounds computer-generated. Made this book very annoying to listen to.

Historia
The Vietnam draft is removing the staff of a rural Wisconsin bar one by one. Dishboys, bouncers, and a bartender named Roger are the latest to get induction notices, each showing a proud face while secretly terrified to face the medical examiners who will determine their fate. When help comes from an unexpected place, new problems arise. Shortlisted for Best American Short Stories 2015, Larson's intimate psychological portrait of fear takes the familiar and turns it into something utterly original.

It’s not officially in my account so I can’t archive it. But it randomly showed up in my account and will start to play automatically when I’ve finished a book. Why, oh why, Audible?

Evil, evil, evil
Revisado: 10-05-19
I knew about some of the injustices of prison labor, but had no idea about the full extent of this neo-slavery. Official slavery was horrible, marked by abuse, rape and torture, but it’s abuse was limited, to a certain extent, because slave owners generally didn’t want to destroy or damage their property. In new-slavery, the “slaves” were owned by no one and could be readily replaced by other black inmates. Thus abuse and torture increased, with many black men dead within months of their enslavement. Many of the book’s descriptions of such torture were difficult to hear. But all of us should know about the evolution and continuation of slavery in the US after our Civil War.

The novel boasts one of the most intelligent and engaging plots in all of English literature and is sure to engage the listener's imagination as it transports us back in time to the seedy, grimy and hazardous streets of Victorian London.

Worth the challenge
Revisado: 07-22-19
I’ve read and re-read Bleak House several times. The first couple times I got completely lost amid all the characters and subplots; watching the Masterpiece series helped, but it’s still a massive Dickens work. Miriam Margolyes is a wonderful narrator of this book. Her expressive reading and ability to give each character her/his own voice helped me keep track of the narrative. Highly recommend this version.

Historia
The unapologetic intensity with which Emily Brontë wrote this story ensures that it will forever be considered one of the greatest works of English literature. A passionate tale of a chaotic and often violent love, Wuthering Heights transcends your average romance and, with its Gothic undertones, takes the listener on a journey through one man's lustful hunt for revenge.

Wonderful rendition of horrible book
Revisado: 01-05-19
I’ve never understood the appeal of Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff and Catherine are narcissistic and abusive. Still, I gave this version a chance. JoAnne Froggatt did an amazing job. I was caught up in the story (for the first time), even though I still despise the characters.

Historia
Half-Korean, half-Japanese, Masaji Ishikawa has spent his whole life feeling like a man without a country. This feeling only deepened when his family moved from Japan to North Korea when Ishikawa was just thirteen years old, and unwittingly became members of the lowest social caste. His father, himself a Korean national, was lured to the new Communist country by promises of abundant work, education for his children, and a higher station in society. But the reality of their new life was far from utopian.

Brutal
Revisado: 12-06-18
The author gives a glimpse of the horrors of North Korea. My only quibble is with the impersonal and non-self-reflective nature of this memoir. The author speaks rather generically about others in his life, including family members. He also regularly states that he could see through the North Korean propaganda as a child, but just pretended to go along with it—all while claiming that all of his neighbors were hoodwinked because of their behavior.

Fifty years ago Malcolm X told a White woman who asked what she could do for the cause, "Nothing." Dyson believes he was wrong. In Tears We Cannot Stop, he responds to that question. If we are to make real racial progress, we must face difficult truths, including being honest about how Black grievance has been ignored, dismissed, or discounted.

Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Joe Barrett wonderfully captures Owen Meany’s voice. I have a much clearer picture of Owen Meany after hearing this narration, despite having read this book several times over the past couple decades.
