Historia
Catherine “Cat” LeBlanc has only been a samurai for a week, tackling trials by fire as they erupt with guts, grit, and a lot of explosives. As a warrior-still-in-training, her unorthodox and spontaneous fighting style has saved many lives. Now, with New Montreal recruiting soldiers for war, Cat will be on the frontlines with fellow samurai like pyrotechnic nun Gomorrah; buggy, trigger-happy Grasshopper; and goth public relations specialist Emoscythe Mordeath Noir.

Excellent development
Revisado: 08-26-24
Cat, our heroine, blasts smart plant aliens with bigger and bigger guns.
But that's not all, the character development picks up a notch from previous instalments, and the quality of the writing is more fluid and immersive. The chapter "The gold star" had me laughing so hard I had tears running down my face. The interaction between Cat and the Grasshopper character is absolutely delightful.
Five gold start for this book.

It only gets better
Revisado: 04-08-24
A gripping story arc, which has only improved throughout the books.
Exceptionally well crafted character development. Excellent narrative pace. Attentive use of words which allow an immersive experience.
It stings to have to wait for the next book.
As counterpoint to these books, think of the Cradle World Series, and He Who Fights With Monsters.

Historia
All her life, Spensa has dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she's a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing. The rumours of his cowardice are true - he deserted his flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them. Spensa is sure there's more to the story. And she's sure that whatever happened to her father in his starship could happen to her. When she made it outside the protective shell of her planet, she heard the stars - and it was terrifying.

Kind of ok
Revisado: 03-19-20
Follows well on the first book, but from somewhere in the middle I hit a stretch of unrelenting dreariness which put me off the book for a good while. Eventually I soldiered on, and it’s fine at the end.

Historia
Feel like you don’t belong? You’re not alone. The world has never been more connected, yet people are lonelier than ever. Whether we feel unworthy, alienated, or anxious about our place in the world, the absence of belonging is the great silent wound of our times. Most people think of belonging as a mythical place, and they spend a lifetime searching for it in vain. But what if belonging isn’t a place at all? What if it’s a skill that has been lost or forgotten? With her signature depth and eloquence, Toko-pa maps a path to belonging from the inside out.

Relevant content, flawed delivery
Revisado: 09-06-18
The content of this book is very relevant to the person seeking self knowledge / improvement. The problem with this audio version is not the message, but the messenger. The author/reader gasps quite loudly at the end of every sentence, and it takes away the attention from what she is saying. I was wondering if I had turned a bit too purist on the vocal quality, so I paid attention to the other book I was listening to at that point, one of Harry Potter's books read by Stephen Fry. If I pay close attention to the sound I can manage to hear the moment when he inhales after reading a whole paragraph, but it is soft enough to be ignored. Unfortunately in this book that is not the case (for me). I would suggest to you that (GASP) you'd be better reading the text version (GASP) of this very important material (GASP). At least, listen to a sample to gauge what I'm talking about.

A very well written journey spanning the space between your inner dialogue and God.
The author takes from various spiritual disciplines and uses modern, day to day examples to make his points. The book is easy to understand and touches all central points of the relationship between one and self.

one of the best narrations
Revisado: 01-18-17
I don't know if when recording this book Susan Ericksen was about to get a head cold, because her tone of voice is slightly mellower here when compared to other books, and it makes for a fantastic narration.
The story itself delivers its well balanced content of character development, suspense and police procedural drama. In this book we are introduced to Trueheart for the first time, which marks the book as a landmark one. Recommended.

space vampire erotica
Revisado: 06-04-13
The opening of this book was intriguing enough; the earth has been invaded by technologically superior aliens, who did not blow everybody to smithereens, but just occupied the planet and let the party go more or less as it was, changing the bagel fillings and stuff.
The heroine is presented with skill enough to somehow allow a bond with the reader to form.
Then comes the alpha male incredible handsome alien. OK, the stereotype has been used to exhaustion, but I ride along to see what happens next.
The plot reveals the vampire angle. Crap, not another alpha male vampire novel! Said I to myself, and was sorely tempted to drop the effort of listening altogether, but well, since I was already on my commute, I plodded along a bit more.
Some sex scenes appear. I'm always open to good erotica, but here I was surprised to notice that the sex descriptions, albeit being very explicit and carefully done, left me absolutely cold. Maybe a personal fluke, I mean, I like sex as much as the next person, but this one didn't manage to incite in me anything but a bored sigh. Go figure.
Then the rest of the plot somehow comes along, the vampire angle is thankfully not emphasized, and a mildly interesting emotional conflict on human/alien love/hate master/slave perspective begins to unfold.
At this point my attention is already elsewhere. I might finish this book when I have nothing better to hear, while my next credit drops. I made the mistake of buying the second book, after hearing just the initial chapter, and since it was down-marked to a couple of bucks, but I would not have done it if I had waited enough.
On the technical audio side, the reader does a nice job. I liked her voice and she managed to read the sex passages gracefully, not always an easy task.

Historia
Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science - as well as religious and cultural institutions - has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man's possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman's fertility and fidelity. But this narrative is collapsing....

amazing
Revisado: 10-24-12
This is a well researched book, that while focuses on sexual human behavior, touches many other human traits during evolution, such as war and agression, cooperation and the overal impact that our culture might have in the research of our own selves. For an example I liked, they discuss how the victorian values and traditions biased the way Darwin reported his findings, and how his writings were censored to remove ideas offending the common beliefs of that time. The authors clearly name many controversial themes that are deeply ingrained in our cultural behavior and challenge their pertinence to what being human really means.
