Historia
Eric disappeared when he was three years old. Ben looked away for only a second at the grocery store, but that was all it took. His brother was gone. Vanished right into the sticky air of the Florida Panhandle. They say you've got only a couple days to find a missing person. Forty-eight hours to conduct searches, knock on doors, and talk to witnesses. Two days to tear the world apart if there's any chance of putting yours back together. That's your window. That window closed five years ago, leaving Ben's life in ruins.

who's bad?!
Revisado: 08-15-18
I enjoyed Bad Man by Dathan Auerbach. The story hits hard with elements of horror, mystery and family drama and it’s thought-provoking and immersive as all get-out to boot. I suppose another reader might say the story plods along a bit; and I guess I caught myself thinking the same thing a time or two, but in the end, I decided I liked the pacing and felt it suited the story. A slow burn? Sure. But a smoldering, daring, catching burn to say the least. Maybe it didn’t creep me out as often as Penpal but it certainly pulled at the heartstrings and offered a hefty dose Auerbach’s dark intensity. Mr. Auerbach, I’d preorder your next title now if I could.

Historia
This best-selling debut by an award-winning writer is both an eerie contemporary ghost story and a dread-inducing psychological thriller. Maggie is a successful young artist who has had bad luck with men. Her last put her in the hospital and, after she’s healed physically, left her needing to get out of London to heal mentally and find a place of quiet that will restore her creative spirit. On the rugged west coast of Ireland, perched on a wild cliff side, she spies the shell of a cottage that dates back to Great Famine and decides to buy it.

Gather round the fire for this one!
Revisado: 08-06-18
This one creeped me out. But it isn’t the books dreadful supernatural side or its finely realized characters that impresses me most; the book's setting wins out this time. Desolate and awful (archaic) and mysterious as the sea.

hard to make the back of the head look alive
Revisado: 11-23-16
Good stuff all the way around. Genuinely creepy atmosphere and imagery. It very much did get under my skin. A little slow here and there, but I don't mind a little slow. And I don't need an exploding vehicle every other page. Look elsewhere if you do. But I'm telling you, don't pass this one up. You'll be missing out on a case of the creeps.

Historia
Ben McKelvie believes he's moving up in the world when he and his fiancée buy a house in the cushy Washington, DC, suburb of Barcroft. Instead he's moving down - way down - thanks to Madeleine Roux, the crazy neighbor whose vermin-infested property is a permanent eyesore and looming hazard to public health. First Ben's fiancée leaves him; then his dog dies, apparently killed by a predator drawn into Barcroft by Madeleine's noxious menagerie. But the worst is yet to come for Ben.

It came out of nowhere and took his voice
Revisado: 11-23-16
Yes. The creature in the woods. It has been done before. But Bill Schweigart has done it right. No, he's done it better. There are moments of actual suspense herein, and moments of surprise. Real people with problems are dealing with The Beast of Barcroft. It does have a bit of a B-movie feel, but I'd easily give it B+ for its added attention to detail.

Historia
It was no secret that journalist Jack Sparks had been researching the occult for his new book. No stranger to controversy, he'd already triggered a furious Twitter storm by mocking an exorcism he witnessed. Then there was that video: 40 seconds of chilling footage that Jack repeatedly claimed was not of his making, yet it was posted from his own YouTube account. Nobody knew what happened to Jack in the days that followed - until now.

biting my fingertips down to the bone
Revisado: 11-23-16
Mr. Sparks isn't a very nice fella, but he isn't a horror of horrors either. In today's media-driven world, he made an awful sort of sense to me. I was able to set aside our differences and look for our commonalities. In other words, Jack is a nicely fleshed-out character. As the story moved on and the nasty, creepy bits started piling up like old bones, I found myself caught up with Jack and puzzling over what might happen to him.

Revisado: 11-23-16
Certain Dark Things is very much worth the credit. I zipped right through the whole thing. Then I wished that there could be just one more dark and creepy story. Good characters, good stuff all around. If M J Pack comes out with another collection, I'll be there with my trusty flashlight and the price of admission.

Historia
Deep in the heart of Appalachia stands a crooked farmhouse miles from any road. The Morrows keep to themselves, and it's served them well so far. When girls go missing off the side of the highway, the cops don't knock on their door. Which is a good thing, seeing what's buried in the Morrows' backyard. But 19-year-old Michael Morrow isn't like the rest of his family. He doesn't take pleasure in the screams that echo through the trees.

ATE IT RIGHT UP
Revisado: 10-30-15
Another great Ania Alhborn title. With finely realized characters and a hefty dose of place and time, Brother is suspensful and subtle (but not too boringly subtle), and will certainly appeal to fans of horror and dark suspense. The novel may not appeal to those who need a solid line between the bad and the good, but I think most will find this novel well worth the price of admission.

this one has teeth. it's creepy and at times disturbing. i hope audible snatches up additional Adam Nevill titles as soon as possible. It's hard to find good and spooky horror fiction. i'm glad i now have another author to keep tabs on.

Historia
When Laurie was a little girl, she was forbidden to enter the room at the top of the stairs. It was one of many rules imposed by her cold, distant father. Now, in a final act of desperation, her father has exorcised his demons. But when Laurie returns to claim the estate with her husband and 10-year-old daughter, it's as if the past refuses to die. She feels it lurking in the broken moldings, sees it staring from an empty picture frame, hears it laughing in the moldy greenhouse deep in the woods.

Historia
There is an old, empty house in Devil's Cleave, a deep gorge that leads from the high moors down to the harbour village of Hollow Bay. The house is Crickley Hall and it's large and grim, somehow foreboding. It's rumoured to be haunted. It's thought to hold a secret. Despite some reservations, the Caleighs move in, searching for respite in this beautiful part of North Devon, seeking peace and perhaps to come to terms with what's happened to them as a family. But all is not well with the house....

Any additional comments?
get it. read it. good good good. being a jaded horror reader, i didn't think i would like Crickley Hall. I was wrong. I deeply enjoyed it. was it terribly scary? no, but i did get the creeps from time to time. and it was a very interesting read. the characters were good. their relationships were believable. there was plenty to keep me coming back when the chills were only so-so. the reader is extraordinary. his nuanced reading adds to the material. it lends the lines an extra push of reality, of "this is actually happening."
