Good story, not as good storytelling
Revisado: 04-15-25
The first half of the book is very slow but stay with it, the second half pays off. I wouldn’t call the trope “enemies to lovers”. It’s more like “indifferent, if unwilling, acquaintances to lovers” but that actually works perfectly for this story. When Blythe and Everard do start finally falling, the fall is hard and their tender moments are oh-so-sweet. And little brother Orin is an absolute charmer! He steals the show for certain.
Amy Scanlon’s narration was…..odd. There were times when it was perfect: the emotion, the inflection, the accents all wonderful. And then there were times she would use this nasally, sneering voice that made my skin crawl. Lines that should have been innocuous ended up sounding sinister or downright creepy. It was off-putting and even distracted from the story at times.

Clara has been missing from the London marriage mart for six years and is reluctant to return. That feeling only grows when she happens to meet Lord Eaton—a rather arrogant, proud earl who vexes her from the moment they first meet. Not wanting to allow herself to be put down by a pompous, self-righteous man, she agrees to the silly game he proposes. The first to make the better match by the end of the season... wins.

A fun, lighthearted clean romance with witty banter and well developed characters. While the trope is familiar, Audra Wells does a great job of keeping the story unpredictable and the conclusion satisfying. And those kissing scenes are just perfect!
I don’t love books with a male & female narrator. I find the back and forth of hearing characters in 2 different voices jarring. However, both of these narrators did a splendid job and compliment one another nicely.

Book Hangover Kinda Story
Revisado: 03-07-25
This was such a great book! I’m not usually a fan of time travel — it’s just not my thing — but the characters are enchanting, the story compelling and so very well written. I’ve read a number of Sarah M. Eden’s books and this is hands down my favorite. I didn’t want it to end and cannot wait until the next in the series.
Also, the narration was fabulous!! Mary Jane Wells does an incredible job with each accent and with the emotional deliverance. She really brings this story to life.

Historia
Gloucestershire, 1813. Miss Mary Lound of Tapley End would be the first to say that she demonstrates more grace with a fishing rod in her hand than she might ever twirling in a ballroom. This was not, however, a problem until her ne'er-do-well brother sold the family estate, leaving Mary and her mother in very straitened circumstances. When the new owner, Sir Rowland Kempsey, takes up residence, Mary decides to direct her energies into recovering her beloved home by catching a husband.

Clever Story
Revisado: 02-15-25
I love Sophia Holloway’s smart style of writing and her sharp humor. Mary is a realistic blend of brash confidence that hides deep insecurity. Sir Rowland’s attraction to her is heartwarming and his responses to her behavior are mature and thoughtful. I appreciated this aspect a great deal as I tire of authors leaning on the miscommunication trope so often.
Also, Matt Addis is a fantastic narrator. The timbre of his voice reminds me of Alex Wyndham. I could listen to him read dictionary entries.

Historia
Lady Juniper Amberton is content to live in the shadows of high society, much preferring the company of a good Gothic novel to the endless parade of suitors. Her creative spirit and quiet charm make her unusual among the ton, but Juniper knows the rules of her world: daughters of earls marry well, not for love. That is, until the son of an earl—once the humble servant to a duke—steps back into her life.

Sally Britton never disappoints. Jack and Juniper’s story is sweet and charming and just makes you smile which is exactly what you expect from this series. It’s so refreshing to read a lighthearted, clean, low-angst romance that gives you warm and fuzzies. A perfect cozy read.

Fun, Quirky Characters
Revisado: 02-12-25
This story is fun and funny and exceptionally well written. Sophia Holloway’s writing style is very reminiscent of Georgette Heyer — she has such a way with words! Her characters are delightfully quirky and the plot rambles along in the most enchanting way, I could hardly bear to put the book down. I loved every minute of it.

Unique Concept
Revisado: 02-02-25
I found the setting for the book (turn of the century circus) incredibly fascinating and I thought that Mabel and Jake were both compelling characters. I had a hard time getting into the first couple chapters but, overall, thought the story was pretty good. It’s not one I will reread, though.
The narration was a little dull and I think that is why I had a hard time in the beginning. But it improved once I sped it up to 1.25x.

From acclaimed authors Aimie K. Runyan, J'nell Ciesielski, and Rachel McMillan comes an evocative, three-part novel about a thread of connection during World War I--a single scarf that links three extraordinary women, each battling societal expectations, enduring the devastations of war, and striving for personal growth amidst the chaos.

Best 2 Out of 3
Revisado: 01-17-25
The concept for the book was intriguing. I’ve read quite a few short-story anthologies and even series with multiple authors and a common theme. But this was the first multi-author book I’ve read that wove the stories together in such a way with a unified epilogue.
I enjoyed 2 of the 3 stories excessively and would’ve been delighted to read them as full length novels in their own right. The other story fell flat for me, though, and by its last few chapters I was frustrated and just wanted it to finish so I could move on to the rest of the book.
All 3 authors, however, did a beautiful job portraying different aspects of the Great War to form one multi-dimensional picture. Many books and movies focus only on the foot soldiers or pilots on the front line but there were so many other ways that brave men and women gave of themselves to serve.
The narrators all did a lovely job, even if accents weren’t exactly spot on. A narrator can make or break an audiobook and I thought each one pulled you into the story in their own way.

Historia
William Yorke faces a tall order: convince people he is worthy of the Dukedom of Rockwood that has unexpectedly fallen to him. Returning from London to his enormous estate, he breaks his journey at an inn and finds himself witness to a drunkard selling his wife to the highest bidder. William outbids the coarse competition and offers the woman a position as housemaid at his estate, uncomfortably aware that his impulsive chivalry will lead to talk—something he abhors.

Better Than I Expected
Revisado: 12-03-24
Class difference is one of my least favorite tropes. There are usually moments that are heartbreakingly embarrassing and the resolutions are always so absurd, especially for that time period. However, this story is very well written — as one would expect from Martha Keyes — and knowing from the author’s note at the end (which I listened to first) that it’s based on a true experience helped. As always, the dialog is smart and sharp and the romance is sweet. Definitely listen to “Reputation at Risk” first as we see quite a bit of the rest of the Yorke clan in the 2nd half of the book.
The narration was just okay for me. There were moments that were great but mostly it was too breathy and the inflection at times was awkward and even kind of creepy.

Exceptional Story
Revisado: 11-23-24
What a great way to wrap up a fantastic series! This story, and indeed the entire trilogy, was so well thought out. The characters are complex and engaging. The plot kept me hooked and I finished the book in 2 days. I don’t usually enjoy books with love triangles but this one is played out so well with a perfect HEA.
Also, for long-term fans of Roseanna M. White, the Easter eggs in this book from some of her other series are just delicious! I’m not a squealer but, I confess, I wanted to a couple times :)
The narration was pretty good although Susan Lyons did alternate between 2 different pronunciations of Alethia’s name and that was perplexing.
