Historia
The first ever collection of Iain Banks's short fiction, this volume includes the acclaimed novella, The State of the Art. This is a striking addition to the growing body of Culture lore, and adds definition and scale to the previous works by using the Earth of 1977 as contrast. The other stories in the collection range from science fiction to horror, dark-coated fantasy to morality tale. All bear the indefinable stamp of Iain Banks's staggering talent.

You should probably skip this.
Revisado: 07-22-23
These srories were pretty boring and pointless. The only take away from this is that the culture are not from earth, are taller than humans and have less than 5 toes.
The title story and most of the others were just plain dull. The last one was a garbled mess and actively painful to listen to.

Living the dream will come at a cost, but can Jeff pay the price?

What the heck was that?
Revisado: 04-10-22
I've read every other Hamilton book and loved them. But this one was... dull.
Its based on a mildly interesting sci-fi premise that could go in interesting ways but then, nothing. It's hours and hours (and hours) of cringy sex scenes and family drama. Sprinkle in some pointless pseudo-intellectual pan-European unrest backstory and you've just wasted 15 hours of your life. And all that for an uninteresting and ubrupt ending.
If you enjoy Hamilton books this is not for you!

Historia
Three thousand years ago, in the Southwest Asian lands we now call Israel and Palestine, a group of people worshipped a complex pantheon of deities, led by a father god called El. El had 70 children, who were gods in their own right. One of them was a minor storm deity, known as Yahweh. Yahweh had a body, a wife, offspring and colleagues. He fought monsters and mortals. He gorged on food and wine, wrote books and took walks and naps. But he would become something far larger and far more abstract: the God of the great monotheistic religions.

Enlightening!
Revisado: 03-25-22
I really enjoyed this. Well written and packed full of information that most Christians wouldn't know.
It's sad that I probably couldn't get my mom to read this as think it will make the cognitive dissonance far too uncomfortable to bear.
There is no overt attack on Christianity or any religion in here, but the simple portrayal of how gods were made by us is is impossible to ignore. Well done 😁
Read this book if you want to know where it all came from. My only regret is not being able to see some of the pictures that would be in the physical book.

Oh no...
Revisado: 02-21-22
Oh my goodness... It's another "American navy seals in space" extravaganza... It's so unimaginative it hurts...
Everything is exactly like it would be right now in 2022. Nothing clever at all. Except, oh my goodness, the sky is green... The Iraqi-like insurgents have throat sacks and talk funny... Ooh... Billy-bob, put the MAG-toast in the synth-toaster and make me ultra-breakfast. Come on man...
Told in first person and the main character sees everything and does everything read out by Mr Monotone military man himself. How believable...
Its like James McGill had a slightly slow love child with Skippy the magnificent.

Excellent work
Revisado: 08-01-21
I was a bit worried at the beginning with the narrator, but I guess she was just warming up. Turned out to be one of the better performances I've heard in the end. Once she found her stride and I got used to the accent.
And of course, another excellent story from Reynolds: if a little short. A sign of a good story. I left wanting more.

Especially since it starts with: "Pushing Ice, narrated by John Lee...". What a legend! 😎

Almost
Revisado: 07-06-21
This is after reading all three books.
I love Alistair Reynolds books generally; Revelation Space particularly. This felt different somehow. The setting and premise was primed for something amazing, however never quite hit it. It was either the fact that a pirate / naval theme never quite felt plausible in the far, far future or that the characters felt shallow. The latter I think. Those girls acted like no real person would in many of the situations they found themselves in and were saved by deus ex machina more times than I care to count.
A good work by a capable writer. Maybe undone by an intrinsically flawed idea.
Edit: During my post-review shower I had time to reflect on the following... I did not regret reading this book in any way and I by no means wish to dissuade potential readers. It was a good story with some very interesting and original ideas. I'm happy I experienced it. Just, don't go in expecting exactly the same level of focus on character authenticity as RS. If you can get past that, it's quite enjoyable!

Quoins are accepted currency throughout the thousands of worlds of the Congregation. Ancient, and of unknown origin and purpose, people have traded with them, fought for them, and stolen quoin hordes from booby-trapped caches at risk to life and limb throughout the Thirteen Occupations. Only now it's becoming clear they have another purpose...as do the bankers who've been collecting them.

Classic Stephenson Greatness.
Revisado: 01-06-20
The first half of the book was great. Ignoring the fact that NS thinks country folk are all gun-toting hillbillies and are just waiting to go all hand maid's tale on the more civilised gender-fluid folk of the city, it was quite enjoyable with some interesting premisses developing. Second half...pretty bad. I could never get squared away with the fact that disembodied, scanned, rebooted human conciesnesses would lose all personality and clumsily recreate Lord of the Reamde with some bible chucked in. It's really missing the 'why' here...
