Disappointing
Revisado: 07-23-22
First, I must disclose I did not make it through the whole book. I found it to be a diatribe regarding how “people” in current society are spiritually bankrupt. Rather than inspiring me to look through a lens that sees the god in everyone, the author basically paints a very negative picture of human beings today. I suspect the upanishads has much more to offer than this. Disappointing. I really wanted to like it.

An inspiration for us all
Revisado: 06-01-20
Such a sweet little story. Saint Therese speaks with the words of a young girl about deep spiritual work. It reveals the simplicity of spirituality. I think as we become adults we can make things far more complicated than they really need to be and saint Therese reminds us of this. We are shown how changing our focus to serving others we are able to transcend the lower levels of human nature.

The Darling is Hannah Musgrave's story, told emotionally and convincingly years later by Hannah herself. A political radical and member of the Weather Underground, Hannah has fled America to West Africa, where she and her Liberian husband become friends and colleagues of Charles Taylor, the notorious warlord and now ex-president of Liberia. When Taylor leaves for the United States in an effort to escape embezzlement charges, he's immediately placed in prison.

Any additional comments?
Another person reviewed the book stating the main character was a bit of a spoiled brat. I have to agree with the writer on that one, and yet it was still an engaging story. The main character is extremely cynical. I did not identify with her as a mother, a wife, a friend, or any of the roles she played. I usually am extremely impressed with Russell Banks ability to create characters who have depth that surpass most authors. I'm glad I purchased it. It's not my favorite, but it is an intriguing story. The narration is superb. It's worth the listen. It would be a good pick for a book discussion.

Historia
We are accustomed to think of sociopaths as violent criminals, but in The Sociopath Next Door, Harvard psychologist Martha Stout reveals that a shocking 4 percent of ordinary people, one in 25, has an often undetected mental disorder, the chief symptom of which is that that person possesses no conscience. He or she has no ability whatsoever to feel shame, guilt, or remorse. One in 25 everyday Americans, therefore, is secretly a sociopath.

Any additional comments?
I don't buy it. The author tells us that 4% of the population are sociopaths. That is an incredible figure. Sure, there are people with varying degrees of morality. But, I am sorry. There is no way 1 in 25 of the population actually have no conscience. Those sensationalists and conspiracy theorists out there will love this book. It's definitely provocative and draws you in. I think, however, it's important to read this one with a healthy amount of scepticism.

A beautiful book. The author's voice is unusually well fitted for narrating an audio book. I'm always a little apprehensive when I see narrated by the author books. The book is interesting and profound. It's somewhat simple and yet, not. It's just wonderful. I recommend this one highly.

Historia
This classic work by psychologist and social philosopher Eric Fromm builds upon his previous popular book To Have or to Be? The Art of Being teaches us to avoid the tantalizing illusions of our consumer-driven world by learning to function as a whole person from a state of inner completeness or being. The transition from an identity of having to being creates a state of enlightened psychological and spiritual happiness.

Worse than a waste of time
Revisado: 08-13-11
I read someone's review where the writer pointed out this author criticizes those who talk about things they do not have personal experience with and then he proceeds to go on and on about exactly that. I could have saved myself some money if I'd listened to this advice. He discusses spiritual practices he has analyzed from the outside and makes all kinds of judgements about them. Extremely disappointing.

A thorough introduction
Revisado: 06-03-11
If you have an interest in possibly going in to forensic psychology, this book will give you a good sense of the varied roles the forensic psychologist fill in the field of psychology. It was easy to follow. I give this 4 stars, because it's well rounded but no real eye opening changes to my view on the world or anything of that nature.....but, a good introduction, certainly.

Who are you? It’s the most fundamental of human questions. Are you the type of person who tilts at windmills, or the one who prefers to view them from the comfort of an air-conditioned motorcoach? Our personalities are endlessly fascinating—not just to ourselves but also to our spouses, our parents, our children, our co-workers, our neighbors. As a highly social species, humans have to navigate among an astonishing variety of personalities.
