Historia
Robert Sapolsky’s Behave, his now classic account of why humans do good and why they do bad, pointed toward an unsettling conclusion: We may not grasp the precise marriage of nature and nurture that creates the physics and chemistry at the base of human behavior, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Now, in Determined, Sapolsky takes his argument all the way, mounting a brilliant (and in his inimitable way, delightful) full-frontal assault on the pleasant fantasy that there is some separate self telling our biology what to do.

Historia
The second volume of William T. Vollmann's epic book about the factors and human actions that have led to global warming begins in the coal fields of West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky. Over the course of four years, Vollmann finds hollowed out towns with coal-polluted streams and acidified drinking water; makes covert visits to mountaintop removal mines; and offers documented accounts of unpaid fines for federal health and safety violations and of miners who died because their bosses cut corners to make more money.

Historia
In this delightful, acclaimed bestseller, one of the world’s leading cognitive scientists tackles the workings of the human mind. What makes us rational—and why are we so often irrational? How do we see in three dimensions? What makes us happy, afraid, angry, disgusted, or sexually aroused? Why do we fall in love? And how do we grapple with the imponderables of morality, religion, and consciousness?

Lennon. Dylan. Jagger. Belushi. Leibovitz. The story of Jann Wenner, Rolling Stone's founder, editor, and publisher, is an insider's trip through the backstages of storied concert venues, rock-star hotel rooms, and the political ups and downs of the latter half of the 20th century, right up through the digital age: connecting the counterculture of Haight Ashbury to the "straight world".

Super Groovy!
Revisado: 12-14-17
If you like anything about the history of rock and roll, or classic rock in general, this book will fit the bill! Great narration to an extremely chronological in depth look at the birth and development of Rolling Stone. If you have read RS like I have (lifetime subscription!) you MUST check this out! Includes the backstory on so many bands and rock rumors - I literally found extra chores to do to continue listening to this book!

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

While I admit I had more than a passing interest in the Great Flu, this story meandered just a little more than I expected and had a repetitive quality that didn't totally work for me...but I really like Scott Brick (the narrator).

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Great Presentation
Revisado: 01-24-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Definitely recommend - great, quick-twisting story, good voices to hear for the audio version.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Wasn't sure what to expect - liked the multiple points of view.
What about the narrators’s performance did you like?
The different voices helped to keep the perspectives straight - and it's weird, but I felt the voices actually fit the characters.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Perspectives of an alcoholic.
Any additional comments?
I've been to England; fun to have the accent on the audio and the British train visual from personal experience.

Historia
Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

Rasputin separates fact from fiction to reveal the real life of one of history's most alluring figures. Drawing on a wealth of forgotten documents from archives in seven countries, Smith presents Rasputin in all his complexity - man of God, voice of peace, loyal subject, adulterer, drunkard. Rasputin is not just a definitive biography of an extraordinary and legendary man, but a fascinating portrait of the twilight of imperial Russia as it lurched toward catastrophe.

A Lot To Chew On
Revisado: 01-24-17
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The book was quite long, but then, this is a definitive biography, so make sure you don't bite off more than you can chew! (I nearly did.) The only difficult part was I had to take a break in the middle of the book and came back to it a couple weeks later; it took some time before I could get back into the story and remember all the complex names and places and situations.
What did you like best about this story?
I have been to Russia, and to some of the locales mentioned in this book - the story came alive and transported me back to my time there, and the sense of history it gives. The detail was amazing. To nearly a dizzying effect.
Have you listened to any of PJ Ochlan’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but I thought he did a fine job.
What else would you have wanted to know about Douglas Smith’s life?
N/A
Any additional comments?
The book is awesome, so please don't let my ambiguous comments turn you off - just be sure that you are WAY interested in Rasputin.
