Historia
As "Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective," Charlotte Holmes has solved murders and found missing individuals. But she has never stolen a priceless artwork - or rather, made away with the secrets hidden behind a much-coveted canvas. But Mrs. Watson is desperate to help her old friend recover those secrets and Charlotte finds herself involved in a fever-paced scheme to infiltrate a glamorous Yuletide ball where the painting is one handshake away from being sold and the secrets a bare breath from exposure.

It gets better and better...
Revisado: 06-14-22
1. The first book (A Study in Scarlet Women) was a freebie and it was a good story read by an excellent narrator.
2. The second book (A Conspiracy in Belgravia) was better as the author was the past the introductory stage of Charlotte Holmes' origin story. Again, the narrator, Kate Reading, is excellent and perfect for this series.
3. The third book (The Hollow of Fear) was a progression - Ms. Holmes' most complex case yet with a surprising twist at the end. Kate R again conveys the story perfectly.
4. I just finished The Art of Theft (the 4th book). Ms. Holmes and her cohorts start with a fairly simple (but dangerous) assignment but odds of completion continually decline as they learn of the mounting obstacles to success. Ms. Reading expertly captures the moods and nuances of the adventure.
I like these books and will continue the series through the end.

Any additional comments?
The victim starts off locked in box and from there, things go downhill for the heroine. By virtue of the written word and the narrator's inflection, I felt like I was in the box myself! Gripping and horrific. I highly recommend this book to any who can handle the tense created by the storytelling. I don't often write reviews but this one deserves a listen!

Slow-to-build story but good plot line. This is one of Felix Francis' compositions. I enjoyed listening and will listen again in a year or 2. Martin Jarvis is great.

That was a long 9.5 hours...
Revisado: 11-29-15
Would you try another book from Robin Perini and/or Todd Haberkorn?
Narration was fine; but the story was boring.
Which character – as performed by Todd Haberkorn – was your favorite?
None of them (but this wasn't the narrator's fault)
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Game of Fear?
This book needs a complete re-write!
Any additional comments?
This was a perfunctory execution of a paint-by-numbers thriller/mystery. The main characters were 1 dimensional with mercurial, almost bipolar, mood swings spouting clichés. The story line was choppy with significant unexplained events. Frankly, the only mystery in this was “did the book editor even read the book?” I bought this title on sale and lost on the bargain.

Pritchard was great as usual but the recording had skips, like a scratched LP. Noticeable & irritating, but not enough to interfere with the story.

Beware! Terrible narration...
Revisado: 08-02-15
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Folks who like machinegun-like delivery or 1980s-era computer-generated vocalization with no inflection.
How could the performance have been better?
The narration was so poor that I was compelled to write my first negative review; but I see now that many, many listeners already beat me to the punch. All I can add is that the editor and producer should have both been dismissed along with the narrator before this was delivered to market.
Any additional comments?
A typical Dick Francis novel, which is to say entertaining and satisfying; but ruined by the performance. READ the book instead!

Historia
A game of cards leads Flashman from the jungle death-house of Dahomey to the slave state of Mississippi as he dabbles in the slave trade in Volume III of the Flashman Papers. When Flashman was inveigled into a game of pontoon with Disraeli and Lord George Bentinck, he was making an unconscious choice about his own future - would it lie in the House of Commons or the West African slave trade? Was there, for that matter, very much difference? Once again Flashman's charm, cowardice, treachery, lechery, and fleetness of foot see the lovable rogue triumph by the skin of his chattering teeth.

Where does Flashman for Freedom rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
A splendid story and David Case's reading captures the sardonic nature of Harry Flashman's character perfectly.

Nero steps out of the box in this one.
Revisado: 03-05-12
Would you consider the audio edition of In the Best Families to be better than the print version?
In general, I listen rather than read because I have a long commute. The books-on-iPod make the journey so much more enjoyable.
What was one of the most memorable moments of In the Best Families?
When you find that Nero has lost over 100 lbs to go undercover! It was astonishing that Nero was even able to go outside.
What does Michael Prichard bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?
Michael Prichard has a flat, dead-pan delivery that sounds (to me) like a private eye's recitation of the facts. He's not surprised because he's seen it all. I think Michael is a good fit with the Nero Wolfe series.
