Historia
Over the fifty years that Lorne Michaels has been at the helm of Saturday Night Live, he has become a revered and inimitable presence in the entertainment world. He’s a tastemaker, a mogul, a withholding father figure, a genius spotter of talent, a shrewd businessman, a name-dropper, a raconteur, the inspiration for Dr. Evil, the winner of more than a hundred Emmys—and, essentially, a mystery. Generations of writers and performers have spent their lives trying to figure him out, by turns demonizing and lionizing him.

Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

What Reviewer Schlubbs Said
Revisado: 01-09-23
Loved the imaginative end-of-the-world scenario — until they got to Boulder. Then it seemed to fall apart. I didn’t care about the minutiae of dull conversations that moved nothing forward. Could not get past the stilted dialogue. I gasped NO! Every time a female cried hot, bitter tears or said, “Hold me” or, or, or. A man making a simple comment like, “Well, (fill in the blank) could not “bring down the house” in a hall of 800 shell-shocked strangers. I felt compelled to finish it lest I miss the magic. Loved Kojak and Tom Cullen (even though … really? A “retard,” a divinely spiritual black woman?) Grover Gardner has a beautiful voice. I also gasped NO when he insisted on clearly enunciating every time a word began with the same sound on which the previous word ended: “Stu’s eh (pause) cycle” instead of “Stu’s cycle.” I understand the thinking but found it maddening because we knew what he was saying, and it stopped the story every time. I’m embarrassed to critique SK’s writing because he’s so accomplished. But there we are.

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Brilliant Madeline Miller: not only her writing, but to choose the magical voice of Perdita Weeks to bring her words to our ears. The combination — words, story, voice: intoxicating.

Why is this so comfortingly familiar? They're awful to each other (like my brother and me). But you know they're the greatest of friends (also like my ...). So funny and fun; just start at the beginning.
