Again it comes as no surprise as a reader of Jhumpa's novels; her stories and characters revolve primarily around bengalis in and around new england states hailing from calcutta, india and most of them pursuing PhD's which is so stereotypical. What i like about her writing is that she can express the emotions and feelings of human beings in a very articulate and compelling manner. This one is a combination of her own fiction with some real life incidents that happened in india around the 70's decade. It is an interesting read for the south asian readers; don't know how much interest it would evoke amongst other readers. Also it is a long one totaling 13 hours of listening.

More than 50% of the book is narrated in Italian; so for English readers like me it was a big disappointment. Even though I am a great fan of her writing, this book seriously disappointed me big time. I am not interested in what people think of me as an italian writer being a south asian.

This is my 3rd novel that I have either read or listened to by the author Jhumpa Lahiri. Now i see a clear pattern in her writing style. Which revolves mostly around affluent bengali immigrants from Calcutta making their way into USA; primarily into the northeast part of the country in places such as Boston, New York or Philadelphia. I think it has a lot to do with her childhood days that were spent in these tri states popularly called the new england states. Ironically, most of her characters hold PhD degrees from famous institutions such as Yale, Cornell, Columbia, Harvard, MIT and so on. There is a good blend of eastern and western cultures in her stories. She tends to spice up quite a bit to enhance the romantic component in her novels, she has the uncanny ability to describe mundane events with great clarity and is able to keep her audience in rasp attention while connecting all the un seemingly incoherent dots into a storyline.

Not so impressive when compared to White Tiger. But immigration is a real hard topic to write on especially from an illegals point of view. the writer tends to be sarcastic many a times. the plot keeps dragging on and on and could have been shortened quite a bit. overall it's ok but one needs patience to go over the entire set if 64 chapters.

One of the finest novels I have read so far. Set amidst the backdrop of a long drawn war in Vietnam, this story compares and contrasts the pros and cons of communism versus capitalism ... idealism versus opportunism ... the horrific effects of war and it's consequences on the day to day lives of people ... very touching ... the descriptions are vivid and succinct ... the flow of the story over a period of 10 years is very smooth and natural ... the narrator has even taken efforts to mimic some words in Vietnamese which is pretty cool ... overall it is an engaging novel that will keep the reader hooked

A bit over stretched, yet interesting. some sections are unrelated to the idea of self realization but make it worthwhile to listen.
