I did not want it to end!
Revisado: 07-03-24
I'm a slow reader, whether it be an audiobook or physical copy, but I blew through this book in about 2 days. I'm somewhat new to this genre, as I mostly stick to fantasy or more historical based fiction and non-fiction, but I'm quickly becoming a fan. My only criticism of the series is mayonnaise is not that bad.

Book 2 of an amazing fantasy/political drama. No wonder the first 4 seasons of the HBO series were so good.

Historia
Berlin, 1961. Rudi Möser-Fleischmann is an aspiring photographer with dreams of greatness, but he can't hold a candle to his talented, charismatic twin brother Peter, an ambitious actor. With the sudden divorce of their parents, the brothers find themselves living in different sectors of a divided Berlin; the postwar partition strangely mirroring their broken family.

Can't recommend this book enough
Revisado: 02-08-23
I have been in the habit, lately, of reading books, watching movies/series, and playing video games strongly grounded in historical events. That way, I can be entertained while learning something new... or old, I guess, in the case of history. The Berliners is no exception. I am a fan of the author, Vesper Stamper, and how she has a gift of shining a beautiful light on the darkest spots in the history of humanity. This is even more evident if you own a physical copy of the book that has magnificent illustrations. I would love to dive more into how well this book was written, but, for the sake of not going through the whole plot, I will just say it is well worth the read.

Number one nationally best-selling author and political commentator Michael Knowles masterfully traces the history and effects of political correctness from the early 20th century to the present, revealing its insidious roots, exposing the power-hungry language architects behind its ever-growing control, and examining what this concerted manipulation of speech means for the future of American culture, politics, and minds.

As much as I hate to admit this, Michael Knowles wrote a really good book that has actual words in it.

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Great book but recording quality wasn't great
Revisado: 07-14-21
This is a terrific book for many reasons. The content was compact and insightful. The recording, however, sounded like it was recorded in someone's garage with no sound proofing. Other than that audio issue, the narrator was really good.

An amazing book that draws many parallels to reality today. I purchased the audiobook because I drive a lot and that's the best time to get through a book, but I also bought the physical book which is filled with beautiful illustrations. Both were well worth the purchase.

Historia
When Orwell went to England in the 30's to find out how industrial workers lived, he not only observed but shared in their experiences. He stayed in cramped, dreary lodgings and subsisted on the scant, cheerless diet of the poor. He went down into the coal mines and walked crouching, as the miners did, through a one- to three-mile passage too low to stand up in. He watched the back-breaking, dangerous labor of men whose net pay then averaged $575 a year.

Best read in the full context of Orwell
Revisado: 01-24-20
A well written book with great insight on the living conditions of the early 20th century and the overall political movement of that time. A very Pro-Socialist, Anti-Facist message was given by Orwell in his earlier books like this one. Orwell was spot on about Fascism and what it would do to Europe, but it is an interesting look at his early views on Socialism, a political view he would later begin to reject. This is why I would highly suggest this read (or listen), but I would make sure to read his other books after this one to make sure you understand the full context and evolution of Orwell's views on politics and culture.
