I’ve enjoyed Brian Shea’s Boston Crime Series, but Sign of the Maker is easily the weakest of the first four books. Some of the elements found in the first three books, namely Michael Kelly’s personal life, are mostly absent here, and the book spends significant time describing in detail short-lived and/or minor characters. Given these books are available through Kindle Unlimited, I can’t help but wonder if the author was honoring contractual requirements in releasing this book. Still, the story is worthwhile enough, if a bit unrealistic even by the procedural genre’s standards—how many bombings would it take for the public to stay home, and wouldn’t there be an all hands on deck manhunt?—but 1/3 of the book could have been cut out without taking anything from it. Again, the first three books are good and I’ll happily read the next BCS book at some point; this one just didn’t do it for me.
