Not disappointing
Revisado: 09-01-20
Although I’m not a sci fi/fantasy fan, this book was every bit as enjoyable as the rest of Burke’s novels. Yes, an otherworldly figure is present, but so are Dave and Clete doing what they do well. The action moved along well and I was able to suspend my disbelief enough to stay with it to its satisfactory conclusion. Will Patton is the best narrator; he IS Dave Robicheaux. I look forward to these novels eagerly as Burke creates fully realized characters and an exciting plot.

How did this get on the bestseller list!!
Revisado: 08-14-20
Inasmuch as I am a fan of horror/thriller/mystery books I thought this book would be perfect for me. How wrong I was. I was completely bored, had no interest in the characters or how the conflict would be resolved. It seemed simple to me: Noemi should have left the house as soon as she learned of the strict requirements for being there. From then on I considered her stupid and therefore not relatable. I found no tension in the book, no suspense because I didn’t care what happened to the characters. I almost never quit reading a book, so I finished this one with some hope that I was wrong and that there would be a smashing finale. Didn’t really happen and there was a good bit of predictability in the outcome.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

So disappointed.
Revisado: 01-02-20
This book never engaged me. I frankly did not care about any of the characters and had no interest in what happened. This surprised me because it was such a popular book and I am pretty careful to choose a book that I will like. I am seldom disappointed. The other popular book that I disliked was Gone Girl, so call me peculiar.

For over 40 years, Art Keller has been on the front lines of America's longest conflict: the War on Drugs. His obsession to defeat the world's most powerful, wealthy, and lethal kingpin - the godfather of the Sinaloa Cartel, Adan Barrera - has left him bloody and scarred, cost him people he loves, even taken a piece of his soul. Now Keller is elevated to the highest ranks of the DEA, only to find that in destroying one monster, he has created 30 more that are wreaking even more chaos and suffering in his beloved Mexico.

A Tremendous Finale!
Revisado: 04-16-19
Don Winslow could have ended this story with The Cartel, but he recognized that even after the Zetas and after Adan Barrera (El Chapo) there remain serious problems not only in Mexico but in the US as well. The focus that the current president has put on Mexico to cover for his abysmal lack of understanding and talent presents new issues which hinder a broader understanding of the dependence of the US on Mexico's drugs. Winslow did not lose his way or sell out in writing this book. He is keenly aware that duplicitous acts take place daily in this country. Those who immediately dismiss this book due to their adherence to the Fake News rhetoric, have little interest in seeking truth. I am amazed that reviewers have the temerity to state that it is a bad book even though they quit reading at Chapter 10. At any rate, I found this to be a totally engaging and compelling learning experience. I look forward to whatever Winslow has in store for us next.

Historia
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Loved This Book!!!
Revisado: 06-13-18
I am a little surprised about the less than positive reviews of this book. First, the narration by Will Patton is spot on. He is my favorite narrator and never fails to capture the personality of the characters. This book was no exception. The Mr. Mercedes series was so enjoyable that it was a pleasure to have Holly return in this book. I know many readers were disappointed when that trilogy ended and especially enjoyed her character. I was engaged throughout the book and was able to suspend my disbelief as I have done in so many other books by King. I consider him a genius and this book contributed to that opinion.

The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Engaging history
Revisado: 10-26-17
After many recommendations, I decided that I had missed out not reading this book before.
I was totally captivated by both the story and the background of the times and the personal struggles of the major character and others. Although not familiar with the intricacies of rowing, I learned a lot and contemplated just what is necessary to be a rower. I was not bored in the least. Perhaps it might have been different if I was reading the book rather than listening, but the narrator engaged me totally from the beginning. This was an inspiring look into a huge American victory.

A Beautiful Story
Revisado: 10-10-17
I was impressed by the author's research on the tea industry in China. I feel like I learned a lot from the book. It was beautifully written and kept me engaged and eager to continue listening. I do think that there were a few too many coincidences, especially in a country as vast as China. And the same goes for Los Angeles. Nonetheless, I loved the story and will recommend it to my friends with great enthusiasm.

Fascinating Memoir
Revisado: 09-28-17
Thanks to the author's journaling throughout his life, the reader gets an insightful view of the world of surfing. Surfers must be fascinated by the description of the waves, surf spots and adventures as there is considerable detail. The writer's beautiful language made the long adventure truly enjoyable. Yes, there were areas (like the South Pacific journey) which seemed to drag a little, but there was so much more to come. For those who questioned the length and personal details of this book, I can only say, it is a MEMOIR. It is supposed to be about the writer, his thoughts, his experiences. He did a great job.

Winslow is a great writer!
Revisado: 08-01-17
I am so glad that I listened to this rather than reading it. The narration makes the story come alive. I have read most of Winslow's books and and am amazed at the breadth of his research and understanding of his subjects. He will continue to be one of the writers whom I automatically check out whenever he has a new book.
