Historia
Lies with a Straight Face tells the fascinating story of the precipitous rise and fall of the “ex-gay” conversion industry in a manner that is both enlightening and entertaining. This fast-moving, fact-based book is perfect for those who enjoy the marriage of politics, history and current events. The book features the riveting story of the 1998 Truth in Love ad campaign, where the religious right’s most prominent organizations joined forces to prove that LGBTQ people could be converted to heterosexuality through prayer and therapy.

Born gay
Revisado: 12-07-23
In-depth research on the faux gay conversion con game mainly in a religious context. It is an overwhelming condemnation. It's a must read for any parent who has a child who is gay and is considering changing them using any of these horrendous organizations. Bisen’s message is Don’t torture your child. Accept and love them and learn as much as you can about supporting them!

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Compelling

it got a little long. The point was made several times before and it seemed to linger. I liked the richness of the poetic language. It lost the thread at times, but it was fascinating and historically accurate as a magical fantasy.

Historia
It's Halloween night, when the ghost of bygone poet Renée Vivien haunts the legendary premises at 20 Rue Jacob. Natalie Clifford Barney, the seductive American writer and saloniste, known to all as the Amazon, has invited the who's who of literary Paris 1926 to her 50th birthday party. Never mind that half the guest list is comprised of Natalie's current lovers and exes.

Better than Midnight in Paris: Amusing and informative
Revisado: 11-24-20
I loved the vocalization of sixteen plus characters celebrating Natalie Barney’s 50th birthday. Paris 1920s is a joy and this is better than Midnight in Paris. If you are looking for a great distraction from Covid while sheltering at home for the holidays this is your ticket to a great escape and you can multitask but a glass of champagne and kick back and chill is better

Historia
Set largely in the culture-blending Vieux Port of Marseille at the height of the Jazz Age, the novel takes flight along with Lafala, an acutely disabled but abruptly wealthy West African sailor. While stowing away on a transatlantic freighter, Lafala is discovered and locked in a frigid closet. Badly frostbitten by the time the boat docks, the once-nimble dancer loses both of his lower legs, emerging from life-saving surgery as what he terms "an amputated man." Thanks to an improbably successful lawsuit against the shipping line, however, Lafala scores big in the litigious United States.

Lush language, fair story, good pacing, excellent narrator
Revisado: 02-16-20
I found the story a little thin but the writing was lush and colorful. The characters and motivations could have been fleshed put more. His understanding of the various women’s motivations were stretched thin and his protagonist was far from admirable.

Historia
Though Anderson Cooper has always considered himself close to his mother, his intensely busy career as a journalist for CNN and CBS affords him little time to spend with her. After she suffers a brief but serious illness at the age of ninety-one, they resolve to change their relationship by beginning a yearlong conversation unlike any they have ever had before. The result is a correspondence of surprising honesty and depth in which they discuss their lives, the things that matter to them, and what they still want to learn about each other.

Life is all you have - live it
Revisado: 01-11-20
I realize as a gay woman how much wisdom there is in this conversation between Anderson Cooper and his mother. Class differences aside from their bond and attempt to really be intimate and know and love each other honestly flaw and all is what distinguishes the book. Hearing their voices hives a special intimacy to it for the listener beyond just ink.marks on paper.
I’m an art historian so I knew little Gloria’s story from studying her aunt Gertrude. I knew about the scandal of her mother’s lesbianism and all the other yellow sheet journalistic clickbait stories that followed.
What this book does is bring mother and son up close and personal. Their money insulated them from some of the trails of life we all go through but loss and pain are great levelers. That's what makes this book so compelling. Despite its artifice I enjoyed it so will you. Definitely worth a listen.
