Can’t get through it — awful narration.

I can’t say whether I liked the story, because the narration is so bad, I only got a couple of chapters in before bailing. I will see if I can get this one at my local library. The narrator of this production sounds robotic and sometimes makes strange choices about which word to emphasize in a phrase. If you told me this was read by an AI voice, I would have absolutely no trouble believing you.

Bless her heart, the narrator’s stomach sounds were audible SO MANY TIMES in this. It was really distracting. Also, the “one year later” update is labeled the prologue. It comes at the end—it’s an epilogue! Those kinds of mistakes just make a book feel rushed and careless to me.

As for the story… it’s fine. All I kept thinking is that Millie must be REALLY gorgeous because there can’t be any other reason for the man to be interested in her. He is a fully functioning adult and she is a basketcase to such a degree that she feels like a kid in an adult body sometimes. It’s a shame because some of Lia Louis’s books are favorites of mine. I doubt I will relisten to this one.

Spoilers: The leading man is unbelievably good and patient with the rather idiotic woman, and then … he suddenly isn’t. Just one day becomes angry and ungenerous and says they’re through, listing a litany of (pretty reasonable) reasons they will never work. The same reasons that led her to dump him in the last book. Until she flails out an “I want to marry you one day” announcement. He takes this as a proposal, accepts, and immediately announces their engagement to his family. What?! And… they have not resolved any of their issues. Including what continent they’re going to live on. All the problems remain, totally unremarked upon. The end. Uh. Okay?

I adore LM, but her last couple of books have been pretty out there. With this one, though, she’s back to her best writing. Yes, it is very high-concept, and yes, there are extraordinary coincidences, but the realistic, well drawn characters and attention to detail ground it. It is a beautiful and moving book, and wildly entertaining as well.

This was a wonderful kid’s story which mixes cleverness jokes, and seriousness perfectly. 👍 10/10

From the cover and title, I thought it would be a very happy kids’ book. It’s actually a rather melancholy/bittersweet adults’ book, with lots of funny moments. It is wonderful, and I loved it. Katherine Parkinson, who was so magnificent in The It Crowd, gives a lovely performance, but unfortunately the understated quality of her voice, along with a somewhat muffled audio, makes her rather hard to hear and understand from time to time. That’s the only complaint. Otherwise, wholeheartedly recommend.

Spoilers follow:

The female MC is the stupidest person in the world for not knowing the guy is really the movie star. Yikes. But much, much worse is that the male MC enters into a relationship with her and has sex with her while hiding his real identity. Having sex with someone under a false identity is legally rape. The victim cannot consent because the information they need to consent is being withheld from them. I have really enjoyed this author’s other books, but this is gross. A huge, huge miss.

The Jill Mansell books I have read seem to be over-long and this one is really in need of a lot of editing. The plot is all over the place and not that interesting. The main character gets seemingly forgotten about for long parts of the book, and the leading man even more so. The leading man’s “teasing” is pretty mean at times, and it’s hard to imagine them actually getting along that well as a couple. Finally the narrator’s voice is extremely grating, and her pronunciation of some words — including the word “a”! — is so awkward and odd. Overall, I listened to it only because it was free and I didn’t have anything else to listen to.

Not as good as The Secret Bridesmaid

I absolutely adored The Secret Bridesmaid, so I rushed to listen to another by the same author. I was pretty disappointed. The plot was so-so (it’s hard to respect the main character, who can’t let go of an ex who treated her like garbage). The romantic interest was likable enough but missing that noble quality … I like that it’s mainly about it the heroine’s growth, but it feels like the man puts in virtually no effort. Finally, the narrator—I don’t know why, but her voice and her characterization of the lead just got on my nerves. Not that she isn’t talented—just not my cup of tea. I can’t see myself ever listening to this one again, or recommending it to a friend.

I love this author’s books. I haven’t read them I all, but of the ones I have: The heroines struggle a lot, but they aren’t stupid or annoying like many others. The men might be a little too good to be true, but they’re very nice to read about! The plots don’t depend on lies or idiocy. Very satisfying and enjoyable!
