Historia
In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lays out the facts about the epidemic of teen mental illness that hit many countries at the same time. He then investigates the nature of childhood, including why children need play and independent exploration to mature into competent, thriving adults. Haidt shows how the “play-based childhood” began to decline in the 1980s, and how it was finally wiped out by the arrival of the “phone-based childhood” in the early 2010s.

Great critique on a widespread issue
Revisado: 06-23-24
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and think he provides clear evidence of sociological change from 2010 forward, and recommend the book & for people to wrestle through his writings.
My critique, I would like to have see him broaden the scope beyond technology and not conflate technology & mental impairments so tightly. I think there are other contributing factors that need to be brought in, such as the implications of coming out of postmodern thought, the liberal lefts articulation of expressive individualism, fixation on sexuality, the overflow of Marxist ideology coming from the Frankfurt school, Ferrari education etc. this only scratching the surface, but I think there are other factors that go into the conversation.
Critiques aside, he did a superb job on providing practical steps to assist us as a society to move away from technological captivity that has enslaved, to a posture that can handle technology with wisdom.

Cancel culture is a new phenomenon, and The Canceling of the American Mind is the first book to codify it and survey its effects, including hard data and research on what cancel culture is and how it works, along with hundreds of new examples showing the left and right both working to silence their enemies.

Historia
As lead singer and songwriter for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis has lived life on the razor's edge. Much has been written about him, but until now we've only had his songs as clues to his experience from the inside. In Scar Tissue, Kiedis proves himself to be as compelling a memoirist as he is a lyricist, giving us a searingly honest account of the life from which his music has evolved.

Good read for RHCP fans and those in sobriety. Loved the ‘80s-90s musical references.

Historia
Many academics attack the very idea of a Western canon as chauvinistic, while the general public increasingly doubts the value of the humanities. In Rescuing Socrates, Dominican-born American academic Roosevelt Montás tells the story of how a liberal education transformed his life, and offers an intimate account of the relevance of the Great Books today, especially to members of historically marginalized communities.

Not entirely what I expected, but still good
Revisado: 05-14-22
This book presents a good defense of liberal education. St John's hosted Roosevelt, but I was unable to attend so I decided to read the book. I guess I anticipated a little more interaction with the great books, it was more of an autobiography with the great books intertwined. He has a great story, definitely a life of perseverance.
If anything I was encouraged to pick up a couple first-hand sources along the way. I ended up reading Martin Luther's letters from Birmingham jail and a book from Freud because of this book. then I went back to this one to finish :)

Historia
In Modern Social Imaginaries, Taylor continues his recent reflections on the theme of multiple modernities. To account for the differences among modernities, Taylor sets out his idea of the social imaginary, a broad understanding of the way a given people imagine their collective social life. Retelling the history of Western modernity, Taylor traces the development of a distinct social imaginary.

Not what I anticipated
Revisado: 05-09-22
Although there were many excellent points along the way, this book was difficult to follow structurally. It went down numerous rabbit trails, making it difficult to clearly see the central idea of each chapter.

Historia
The Color of Compromise takes listeners on a historical journey: from America's early colonial days through slavery and the Civil War, covering the tragedy of Jim Crow laws and the victories of the Civil Rights era, to today's Black Lives Matter movement. Author Jemar Tisby reveals the obvious - and the far more subtle - ways the American church has compromised what the Bible teaches about human dignity and equality.

Tracing the past and correcting the present
Revisado: 08-02-20
In order to understand the present, you need to understand the past. The Color of Compromise is more reminiscent of a historical overview, than just an isolated look at the church. I think this is a great strength and an appeal to a larger audience. The last two chapters are worth the price of the book, especially when he begins to provide examples of how to go across the racial divide and engage others.

Historia
In this eloquent and persuasive book, Neil Postman examines the deep and broad effects of television culture on the manner in which we conduct our public affairs, and how "entertainment values" have corrupted the very way we think. As politics, news, religion, education, and commerce are given less and less expression in the form of the printed word, they are rapidly being reshaped to suit the requirements of television.

Food for thought
Revisado: 11-18-19
If you cannot bring yourself to recognize the era in which the book was written, you will struggle. The conversation is fixed to the time frame of early TV entertainment. Nonetheless, there are some excellent critiques and nuggets you will pick up along the way. As others have pointed out, the end of the book is the best where he interacts Huxley work. My only critique is the over emphasis on entertainment and not enough interaction over TV as a healthy means of entertainment and education.
