Historia
An atmospheric debut novel set on the gritty streets of Victorian London, Some Danger Involved introduces detective Cyrus Barker and his assistant, Thomas Llewelyn, as they work to solve the gruesome murder of a young scholar in London's Jewish ghetto. When the eccentric and enigmatic Barker takes the case, he must hire an assistant, and out of all who answer an ad for a position with "some danger involved", he chooses downtrodden Llewelyn, a gutsy young man with a murky past.

Even in a small town evil looms. I like how with each novel the clan around Nikki develop a true-to life network of relationships. The line between good & evil, right & wrong isn’t always black & white, especially in the fabric of life in a small town.
I did find that in this particular story line the voices of some of the women were difficult to distinguish between.

Revisado: 04-17-24
I love to listen to Henrietta Miele as she skillfully brings each character alive with their own diction and cadences. Joy Ellis has created a village of characters that I would love to sit and have a meal with. The story line are woven together nicely and keeps the reader guessing who’s who and who did what. So enjoyable!

Revisado: 03-27-24
Great narration by Brian Hutchison. I would listen to any audiobook he narrates. An entertaining tale of the desperate time period of the Great Depression. A time of not only financial depression but of oppression of segments of the American people. It is a tale of desperate realities, integrity, compassion, and determination.

Historia
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Revisado: 02-25-24
What a great story! The mystery, the simplicity, the dry sarcasm makes for a great listen. Grainger weaves a tale of intrigue using the generation gap, multiple cultures and histories to tell a story about people; family and community. Gildart Jackson does a wonderful job of presenting the characters with such skill.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

I appreciate how the story line develops each band of characters on both the “good” and “bad” sides of the conflict. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys this genre.

Revisado: 08-12-20
The narrators have excellent skills in the reading of various characters. As a listener, the smooth transitions from character to character keeps the story alive in my minds eye. I can envision the story as if I’m watching it from above, like a fly on the wall. They do an excellent job.
