Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Began well but should have been tighter
Revisado: 09-10-22
The early part of the story was classic King but then it sort of started to spin too far out. Some threads that went nowhere - like Red Molly and Hannah that seemed like they would be important but that could have been entirely dispensed with. I think a tighter edit was needed. I will say that character development has always been King's strong suit and it was solid here too.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

More touching than I expected
Revisado: 08-26-22
You truly feel for Kya and the depth of her loneliness. The idea that a child could overcome such neglect and still become a functioning adult is humbling.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

An informative introduction
Revisado: 11-25-21
Very informative and interesting. I did enjoy the narration, however I was slightly distracted by the narrator's pronunciation of Karma and Dharma. But that was a minor issue. Overall I enjoyed this book.

Slower moving than the others in the series
Revisado: 10-12-20
This is the 6th Rachel Aaron book I have read. Usually her stories are swift moving. This one not as much. I, like the Heartstriker Clan, wanted to kill Julius myself at times just to shut him up. I won't abandon the series but hope the next book is more true to form.

Historia
They say family always sticks together, but when you're your dad's only lifeline and the whole world - humans, dragons, and gods - wants you dead, "family bonding" takes on a whole new meaning. My name is Opal Yong-ae, and I'm in way over my head. I thought getting rid of my dad's bad luck curse would put things back to normal. Instead, I'm stuck playing caretaker to the Great Dragon of Korea. That wouldn’t be so bad if he wasn't such a jerk, or if every dragon on the planet wasn't out to kill him, or if he was my only problem.

Historia
This Pulitzer Prize-winning classic tells the poignant tale of a Chinese farmer and his family in old agrarian China. The humble Wang Lung glories in the soil he works, nurturing the land as it nurtures him and his family. Nearby, the nobles of the House of Hwang consider themselves above the land and its workers; but they will soon meet their own downfall. The working people riot, breaking into the homes of the rich and forcing them to flee. When Wang Lung shows mercy to one noble and is rewarded, he begins to rise in the world, even as the House of Hwang falls.

Historia
Dale Maharidge’s father, like many World War II veterans, never talked about “the good war”. There was just one clue to his dad’s experience as a US Marine - a portrait with a close friend that hung permanently in their home. In The Dead Drink First, Dale, now a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, recounts his 18-year quest to find and repatriate the missing remains of his dad’s buddy, Herman Walter Mulligan, 73 years after he was killed in action.

The story started out slow. But of course so did the true life unfolding. By its completion though, it felt as if I had gone along on an extremely emotional journey. An excellent read.
