awful narrator accent/pronunciation
Revisado: 04-23-24
Had difficulty concentrating with a british-accented narrator trying to imitate southern US accents. i wanted to scream when he pronounced Arkansas “ar- kansas “. really? REALLY? what’s the point ????? Get an American-English speaking narrator.

ready to scream if the narrator doesn’t stop whispering.
Revisado: 03-07-24
I’m ready to just get the kindle edition. I want to strangle the narrator for her attempt-at-sexy or whatever she’s going for whispering. It’s excruciatingly maddening, and i really do want to finish the story. otherwise it’s a good story

Historia
When Pippa Dunn, adopted as an infant and raised terribly British, discovers that her birth parents are from the American South, she finds that "culture clash" has layers of meaning she'd never imagined. Meet The English American, a fabulously funny, deeply poignant debut novel that sprang from Alison Larkin's autobiographical one-woman show of the same name.

author has an agenda
Revisado: 12-14-23
I’m adopted.Public closed adoption in the 60s. I’ve known many people who are also adopted both public and private. I’ve many friends who have themselves adopted children. The author either has no experience with (nor done any research on) adoption as was evident from the very beginning. It also quickly became clear that she has very strong political beliefs which were poorly/thinly disguised as those of the book characters. Note to author: your opinions are just that. Opinions . A fictional book should not be used as a platform to vent. And maybe next time, do some research on your subject. Know what you’re talking about. It’s clear you’re clueless about adoption, US laws and issues surrounding adoption. Very disappointed I wasted a credit on this.

author really knows nothing about subject
Revisado: 06-11-23
i hate bashing a book. i certainly can’t write one myself. First off from the start this was painfully drawn out. Great story idea. Also really tired of people who know jack about adoption weighing in with yet another sob story. For starters we stopped using “real parents” decades ago. But I won’t get on the adopted soapbox and point out all the bits regarding being adopted that are pretty much just Hollywood’s rubbish portrayal of adoption. The author does a poor job with the subject, trying to insert modern ideas and attitudes into a much different time period. Also not debating the history of Britain and India but even my conservative brain felt it’s a condescending and patronizing view of Indians and the Indian characters were cartoonish and stereotypical. And i really wanted to throttle Connie-such a not believable and frustrating character. Story just too predictable. I finished it because i rarely ever just don’t finish a book. But i wasted a good few hours of my life.

Really enjoyed this. Thought it was going to be very predictable but it wasn’t. Just a really good story. Little bit different and not a sappy love story. Enjoyed the narrator. Hate it when a mediocre narrator ruins a good book.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. pretty darn good
Revisado: 11-22-15
didn't like ending but don't know how else is could be ended without turning sappy and predictable. also as an American I like the fact that it occurred in UK. Americans tend to thing aliens only come for us or land here. and we're the only ones who can ever figure out what to do to save the world. that has yet to be determined. nice character development. novel take on alien "invasion" or contact. glad I listened to it. think audio was better than a read would have been. Matt- Luke's a putz. you done good, real good.

Historia
In Captive in Iran, Maryam and Marziyeh recount their 259 days in Evin. It’s an amazing story of unyielding faith - when denying God would have meant freedom. Of incredible support from strangers around the world who fought for the women’s release. And of bringing God’s light into one of the world’s darkest places - giving hope to those who had lost everything, and showing love to those in despair.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Devout Christians
What do you think your next listen will be?
Jodi piccoult
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Patty Fogarty?
No idea
Any additional comments?
Misleading summary. This might be a good story but the writing and narration is juvenile and forced. They're trying to take an evangelist's .pamphlet and turn it into a story. Kind of like a really bad version of Left Behind. At least that has some good writing. I'm not knocking Christianity or anyone's religious beliefs but I didn't buy this to be lectured. And that's how I felt. I wanted a story not someone trying to convert me. Couldn't even finish it.

Revisado: 08-11-14
What would have made One Summer better?
Less sappy glop.
Has One Summer turned you off from other books in this genre?
Not necessarily
Have you listened to any of Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes. McLarty has a great voice.
Any additional comments?
Expected much better from baldacci based on his other books which I've read. This is not his forte. Completely sappy predictable romance novel stuff. And infuriating at points because I had to listen til the end but the characters and their lines were just unbelievably juvenile and pat, like a kid wrote it. Hate to be so harsh but this author is good and needs to stick with what he does best. This genre is NOT it.

author should never have approved this narrator
Revisado: 03-31-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Glad I finished it. Interesting twist on what otherwise might be a predictable story line. But Heaven help me, that narrator was just flat out terrible. I don't know if he isn't a native speaker of English;was trying to mimicking regional US accents with which he is completely unfamiliar ; or if part of the narration was an experiment in electronic voice synthesizing. At first I thought it was a computer voice. Then the character's accents got weirder and more and more forced. They also morphed from character to character as book progressed. A character's accent at end wasn't same as when book started.
Also irritating was the narrator's pronunciation. Sometimes he would over enunciate words like "a" and "the" etc. when colloquial speech was called for. Other times, when such a manner of speaking might be appropriate, he would colloquialize words and phrases. Annoying and inappropriate.
This poor irritating narration prompted me to stop listening more than once. But the story called me back.
How could the performance have been better?
Change narrators.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No! But only because of narrator.
Any additional comments?
Liked the story and nice mix of characters. A bit of the dialogue seemed trite and forced but was an interesting "ghost" story.
