Historia
We live in a place everyone calls paradise. Sure, Kauai’s beautiful, with empty beaches, drip-castle mountains, and perfect surf...but we’ve been "camping" for six months, eating boiled chicken feed for breakfast, and wearing camouflage clothes so no one sees us trespassing in our jungle hideout. The cockroaches leave rainbow colors all over everything from eating the crayons we left outside the tent, and now a tractor is coming to scrape our camp into the river. Standing in front of the tent in my nightgown, I know my own truth: I just want to be normal.

Beautiful, yet painful Memoir
Revisado: 03-18-25
I lived on North Shore Oahu 97-99 while earning my Associate Degree at BYU-Hawaii. I have since returned many times to visit the different islands of Hawaii, and understand the magnetic lure of Kauai.
The Narrator's breathy voice and cadence almost deterred me from listening, but I found at 1.2x speed it was tolerable. Her quotation voices and pigeon were great- but the regular narration felt false and exaggerated.
Aside from that, I lived the storytelling. perhaps because of my own time spent in Hawaii, I loved the lush descriptions. Her unique timeframe and perspective and all her struggles and achievements make for a compelling story. I enjoyed it very much. Thank you Toby for your vulnerability and honesty and sharing.

Historia
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was.

very disappointed
Revisado: 07-16-23
I don't know how this book has so many good reviews. My teenage son and I listened to this on a road trip. I did appreciate that it was all PG listening, but the author would repeat herself and it was a bit hokey, but kept us listening to find out what the protagonist would learn and then do- but it was totally ruined for us in the end. unraveling and making no sense as to a character's reasonable choices.

Lots of brain science
Revisado: 05-02-22
I thought this was heavy on the brain science, and light on the practical application and relatability. The author brings in real world examples and news stories, but honestly it left me more fearful and defeated feeling than empowered or hopeful. Did give some great information and things to think about and talking points with my kids.

Youth theme- not for youth
Revisado: 08-31-21
When I read the description I thought this would be a fun mystery to listen to with my kids, but there the main character is a young adult and more adult themed and right nance than I expected about “Santa’s next in line”. Had to turn it off when it talked about sex toys.
