Historia
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

Helpful compilation of ideas.
Revisado: 07-28-22
Although the information is 35 years old, it was helpful to my understanding modern human sexual relationships. The book is a barrage of ideas and concepts and by the time I was done I thought “well there are a lot of possibilities and we are definitely not all the same.” Anyone struggling with or without sex likely will find the information useful.

Historia
It is now 100 years since drugs were first banned in the United States. On the eve of this centenary, journalist Johann Hari set off on an epic three-year, 30,000-mile journey into the war on drugs. What he found is that more and more people all over the world have begun to recognize three startling truths: Drugs are not what we think they are. Addiction is not what we think it is. And the drug war has very different motives to the ones we have seen on our TV screens for so long.

One simple non-scientific spin on a complex issue.
Revisado: 01-21-19
Just like other pseudo science writing you should do some serious fact checking here. The message seems to be that the only drug war began in the US in the early 1900 century because of a single man. The author paints a wholy one sided view that the problem is not the drugs but the illegality and enforcement of the drug laws. Lessons can be had by examining the much broader geopolitical, economic and biology of those drugs that are legal now. It apparently has gone well for big tobacco, big alcohol and the rising tide of big cannabis. Why must we embrace the legality and marketing of known harmful agents? Take a look around and see who is pulling the strings.

Historia
An essential exploration of why and how women's sexuality works - based on groundbreaking research and brain science - that will radically transform your sex life into one filled with confidence and joy. Researchers have spent the last decade trying to develop a "pink pill" for women to function like Viagra does for men. So where is it? Well, for reasons this book makes crystal clear, that pill will never exist - but as a result of the research that's gone into it, scientists in the last few years have learned more about how women's sexuality works than we ever thought possible.

White, upper middle class, American, college women and sex.
Revisado: 03-24-18
To me, this book offered a perspective of a subset of women who have been sold a particular narrative. There were insights offered that did add to my already confused male brain. The poorly defined “abuse” between the sexes was a central, although not overtly acknowledged theme of this book. The group this book addresses has access to unlimited calories, sedentary lifestyles, entitlement general safety and get a blue ribbon for showing up. I would imagine that Dr. Nagoski could add an interesting contrast between the group of women she wrote about and the far larger group of women and men who, because of their culture, cannot begin to grasp these ideas. I look forward to that sequel!

Historia
A razor-sharp thinker offers a new understanding of our post-truth world and explains the American instinct to believe in make-believe, from the Pilgrims to P. T. Barnum to Disneyland to zealots of every stripe...to Donald Trump. In this sweeping, eloquent history of America, Kurt Andersen demonstrates that what's happening in our country today - this strange, post-factual, "fake news" moment we're all living through - is not something entirely new, but rather the ultimate expression of our national character and path.

The politics of Roger Rabbit!
Revisado: 10-08-17
This is an amazing and timely synthesis of many ongoing and competing forces at work in my culture. It has truly given me a tool by which I can analyze not only my feelings of current events but it also gives me hope that we can survive this wave of illusion and disinformation. If our young are to take what we have given them and make it better for their future generations, then understanding the perils of fantasyland is critical. Wow, what a performance by the author of a world changing dark force!

As an anesthesiologist and in the business of treating pain for the past 35 years I can highly recommend this book. The performance by Mr. Perkins is excellent and adds depth to the multiple times and cultures that play on the history of pain. I would argue with only a very few of the recent facts but that likely reflects only on my understanding. An incredible book and very enjoyable. Couldn't stop listening!

Historia
One hundred thousand years ago, at least six human species inhabited the Earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism?
