Smiled, laughed, and groaned throughout the entire book. GREAT story, exceptional well-written (in an unusual style), totally engaging characters, and *lusciously* narrated. (I'm fairly sure Sebastian York could read the phonebook to me, and I'd be mesmerized). Far better book than I expected - so glad to see it is part of a new series! YUMMY!!!

I could listen to Kaleo Griffith narrate a phonebook. *REALLY.* (His voice is absolute "ear-candy"). But even that could not outweigh the overwhelmingly idiotic, adolescent-level POLITICAL drivel, (intentionally) painfully mortifying embarrassing situations (son trots out into the living room bearing mom's big purple "wiggle stick" just as her new date arrives, etc.....eye roll). There WERE a few fairly well-written steamy scenes (perfectly narrated - and, I'm guessing, put there to bait one into continuing to read/listen), but, the book was - in whole - just too nauseating to finish listening to. *Gah*

TERRIFIC narration (especially of male characters) by Kaleo Griffith, and a couple of the BEST written steamy scenes EVER make the rest of the book well worth the read. *YUM*.

Preface: I normally truly enjoy Maya Banks' books. I loved "Rush," the first book in this series. I was looking forward to this sequel, and was already intrigued by the male lead and the potential for another GREAT read. I am generally empathetic and sympathetic to characters with emotional baggage, and I do NOT enjoy writing negative feedback. That said...

I found both the wildly exaggerated, stereotypical depictions of the poor innocent little destitute "victimized-by-the-big-mean-evil-rich-greedy society" female lead ("Bethany"), to be PAINFULLY, *stupidly/immaturely* gullible, irresponsible waif literally PAINFUL to endure. I repeatedly found myself exclaiming, "Oh, for F's sake!" and PRAYING that Jace would just WALK AWAY from Bethany. I don't want to believe that there is a significant target market of readers naive enough to find this melodramatically pathetic female lead or the plot appealing. It was nauseating. Gah. Maya can do SO MUCH BETTER than this.

What does Shana Savage bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

*Perfect* character portrayal in tone, accent, timing, depth, and delivery; giving them a literal, visceral, heart-stoppingly real presence. *gasp!*

Any additional comments?

What an unexpectedly delicious surprise. Although I already usually love Sylvia Day's writing, the description and reviews did not do this, or it's sequel justice.

Simply spectacular, and *perfectly* narrated to impart teeth-clenching perfect feeling to the characters. *YUM*

Only complaint would be a bit of an odd ending (more like the completion of a chapter, with so much left unresolved. She simply MUST finish the series....hope the negotiations with the publisher resume quickly or other arrangements made, because I can't WAIT to read the next book in this series!!

Any additional comments?

Like a literary version of “Iron Chef,” Sylvia Day (Crossfire series),*OWNS* E.L. James (Fifty Shades series). Sylvia Day uses the same basic ingredients: genre of books, demographics of characters, familiar story line, target market of readers) to demonstrate how *truly* skillful writing, elegant, deep, worthy-of-caring-about character development, artistically, well-constructed and timed plot development (similar to my favorite (Diana Gabaldon - "Outlander" series) from my preferred genre historical fiction). Ms. Day demonstrates a far more mature, skillful hand at the judicial and relevant use of heart-stopping, synapse-melting, um, er…”provocative and engaging literary devices" as well as a 10,000% better choice of a more gifted and professional narrator in the audio (Audible.com) version. These are intense page-turners, with ample sprinklings of opportunities to relieve the tension by laughing out loud and sharing introspection with the flawed, funny, complicated, engaging, and sympathetic characters. Just don’t listen and drive; you’ll find yourself driving off of a cliff. Maybe while running on a treadmill? 9-) Just remember to breathe. (Not for those who are uncomfortable with some explicit sexual situations or language, even though it is well done and critical to both character, plot, and conflict development). Highly recommended. Well done.
