Historia
Medusa's Ankles celebrates the very best of A. S. Byatt's short fiction, carefully selected from a lifetime of writing. Peopled by artists, poets, and fabulous creatures, the stories blaze with creativity and color. From ancient myth to a British candy factory, from a Chinese restaurant to a Mediterranean swimming pool, from a Turkish bazaar to a fairy-tale palace, Byatt transports her listeners beyond the veneer of the ordinary - even beyond the gloss of the fantastical - to places rich and strange and wholly unforgettable.

I loved every story in this collection of short stories by AS Byatt. All share several common threads: plot surprises, an intelligent and loving eye, and a veritable feast of verbal delights. What pleasure abounds in her fiction!

Compelling Subject
Revisado: 02-12-23
This is the compelling narration of a how a pedophile ring was dismantled and brought to justice. It is written from the point of view of the author, Lydia Cacho, who also played a central role in the events that led to it. In its very detailed legal accounting of the case in the Mexican courts and as well as in international tribunals, it seemed a bit difficult for a lay person to follow. However, it never made me want to put it down solely for that reason. What made it more difficult was the narrator’s timber and tone. However, I still recommend it to readers interested in the rights of children and how a corrupt legal system tries to ignore them.

Moving! Exquisite!
Revisado: 02-11-23
At first, I was not sure LC would pull it off. For a while the epistolary form seems to function as a platform for self-aggrandizement in the guise of gushing letters to and from the writer-activist. As it progresses, however, and we begin to see the arc of her brave trajectory as a defender of children and women, we understand that this book is much more than that. It’s an intimate testimony of Cacho’s sacrifice, bravery, and significant contributions to the work of the human right movement in Mexico and throughout the world.

Historia
Denis Diderot is often associated with the decades-long battle to bring the world's first comprehensive Encyclopedie into existence. But his most daring writing took place in the shadows. Thrown into prison for his atheism in 1749, Diderot decided to reserve his best books for posterity - for us, in fact. In the astonishing cache of unpublished writings left behind after his death, Diderot challenged virtually all of his century's accepted truths, from the sanctity of monarchy, to the racial justification of the slave trade, to the norms of human sexuality.
